FG Moves To Regulate IT Profession

The Federal Government has announced plans to crack down on individuals and organisations practising information technology without proper registration.

The Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Sununu, made the disclosure recently in Abuja, directing the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria to enforce compliance with registration requirements.

The move was aimed at sanitising the IT sector and ensuring that only qualified professionals practice in the field.

The CPN has been tasked with identifying and prosecuting unregistered IT practitioners, including individuals and organisations.

The minister warned that anyone found practising IT without proper registration would face the full weight of the law, emphasising the need for for professionalism and standards in the sector.

The minister expressed concern about the prevalence of quackery in the IT profession, emphasising the need for professionalism and standards.

He urged the CPN to “exterminate quacks and undesirable elements” from the profession, citing the example of other regulated professions globally.

Sununu commended the CPN for its efforts in registering individuals and corporate organisations practising IT, noting that the Federal Ministry of Education, was committed to supporting the council’s enforcement of the Act that established it.

He emphasised the importance of mandatory registration with CPN for all IT practitioners in Nigeria.

“The global practice is for professionals to regulate their profession properly to exterminate quacks and undesirable elements from making incursions into the profession. That is the practice all over the world, and we are in total support of it.

“Therefore, all individuals and corporate organizations that are into information technology practice should register with the Computer Professionals (Registration Council of Nigeria) to allow for effective regulation of computer education and practice in Nigeria,”
he said.

This people should rest with their empty , wasted, retrogressive policies. This is an industry run by drop outs all over the world. What kind of useless, hopeless government is this.
Regulate the politics that brought you to power first before thinking of the IT industry that you didn't help to build

This Tinubu's administration is out to squeeze every available means the masses are holding on to for survival. They want to suffocate it with insane taxes. Thus plunging those who are finding their feet in that field into abject poverty.

They are talking about 2 different things here. Are they talking about quacks or about registration?

Meanwhile, core IT concerns cannot entertain quackery. In IT, if you don't know it, you don't know it.

For example, if you don't know cyber security, you cannot work as a cyber security expert because nobody will employ you. IT is not like other fields. It's either you know it or you don't know it. Therefore, the question of quackery should not arise.

As long as there's transparency and the goal is to ensure quality delivery of products and services without any undertone, why not? In so far as it does not hamper innovation as well. Just like the entertainment industry, some form of governance is welcome, but stakeholders should be consulted and involved in the process of developing such regulations, making it all-inclusive. If practitioners lack sufficient skills, or are not following good practice, provide programs that will train and upskill them, don't just close their business because this is providing food for them and families. There's creative and raw talent in Nigeria, and anything that would ensure we channel youth energy into positive, productive, and legal ventures is welcome.

As days pass, things get tougher, but hopefully, we can rise above the tide. “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago.
