Ancient Benin: Was It A City, A Kingdom Or An Empire.) by Emperordynasty: 4:54pm On May 07
Good day Nairaland.

As a big culture enthusiats I have given myself to study the history of the african people.

And one of the cultures that fascinates me is that of Ancient Benin.

The great Civilization of the Benin people has been known to some to have attained the Empire status at some point in time and later declined to just a kingdom.

Others disagree that the Benin Empire was never an Empire at all, but just a large kingdom with influence over small villiages.

And a different school of thought butress the idea that BENIN was more of a city state that only influenced their neighbours because of its unique culture.

Personally i am of the opinion that the benin people where actually the inhabitants of a kingdom that became an empire,

Because by the very definition of an empire, the Oba of benin had control over many other territories aside his major base which was in Edo.
He extended both political, social and military control over regions far away from his own people.
Places under the direct subjugation of benin where part of his empire.

But places with independent rulership who only shared similar values with the benin heritage where influenced by Benin not as a kingdom but as an iconic city state.

Let me know your opinion below, we are all learning there should be no need for abuse and insults

Anyways if you want to find out more about the Benin King who took benin from a small kingdom to an empire

Click the link below to watch the video on the life and rise of Oba Ewaure the Great of benin
To get an idea of what we are saying

It is funny that when you want to discuss Benin history, you feel the urge to ask yoruba to be involved in the conversation why not also ask haussa and fulani and igbo and Nupe to be involved ?

Nigerians are mostly illustrates in the field of history. You guys lack the basis.

1. What is an empire ?
Answer: an empire is a kingdom, the name comes from the romans. Indeed Cesar made himself king but since kingship was not popular, he created the title emperor for himself. So he was emperor, not king, while in reality it was the same thing.

"Empire" has often been used for different purposes, it could be to describe a large kingdom or to describe a union of several previously independent kingdoms into one kingdom with the true king using the title emperor while the former kings and new dukes keep the title "king".

To conclude with, empire is a word with many meanings, but in each meaning you have a kingdom of which you are either emphasizing the size, the power, or the way the kingdom was created.

2. You need to learn how to research history rather than inviting people to come and "teach" you history in an internet forum.
So first ask yourself how to research history. And again, stop focusing on words like "empire", an empire is a kingdom.

Let me help you: look for documents written hundreds of years ago by people who visited our ancestors.

3. Nigerians in general don't know what a kingdom is, they can't differentiate city, village and kingdom. A kingdom is a country with cities and villages within it, for example the united kingdom is a kingdom. Greece is a kingdom, France was a kingdom, Germany was a kingdom...

4. A map published in 1747

You confuse "tribalism tales of superiority" with history.
You clearly did invite two tribalistic Benin-denying yoruba to a thread about Benin history.
When you want to learn about haussa history, do you invite tribalistic anti-haussa igbo to have their input ?
Re: Ancient Benin: Was It A City, A Kingdom Or An Empire.) by samuk: 1:47pm On May 09
Your motive is not clear, but just incase you are up to something else, Benin had nothing to do with Ife until the fairytale was invented in 1897.

I just want to leave this here now because we know how thread like this usually ends.

Re: Ancient Benin: Was It A City, A Kingdom Or An Empire.) by Ghostagain: 3:56pm On May 09
Benin city: formerly called Edda, Benin city was/is the CAPITAL city of Benin Kingdom like Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria.
Benin Kingdom is the precolonial country whose capital we refer to as Benin city.

Stop confusing Benin city with Benin kingdom.

Benin kingdom was a large kingdom (in this sense an empire), Benin city was only a city within Benin kingdom. The Oba of Benin is the King of Benin kingdom, all of it, not just Benin city.

Boss,.i know
Macof, gregyboy and Tao12 to be very responsive to history section.
Thats why i called them out to give their input

Besides the topic is solely about benin kingdom, its not in comparison with any other african society, if it was i would clearly state it

I'm not concerned about ths Benin Origin or connection to any other tribal group, in terms of origin..

I'm only here to discuss how large the benin Empire was if it wss actually an empire (which i believe it was)

So you still think having the input of yoruba supremacists who hate Benin to the core on Benin history of which they know nothing is a reasonable approach ?
When you are wrong, just admit it and stop thinking you can talk your way into being right.

Can your eyes see maps ? It is not people born more than 100 years after the British defeated Benin kingdom who will tell you how big Benin kingdom was. I posted a map drawn in 1747 by people who witnessed Benin, you seem to not have noticed eventhough I posted it several times. It is on such documents that you can see how Benin was.
Your approach is not very intellectual in nature. You're giving me the vibes of a bar conversation. And you clearly invited yoruba supremacists in order to have an e-war.

Tao12 is probably your focus ,because she obviously doesnt share the same views we have..

No meaningful debate takes place without an opposing force

None of them is an expert on Benin history.
Only two of them (samuk and gregyboy) actually do proper research on Benin history.
Dude, look, history is not a debate. It's a science based on research.
When I'm doing mathematics, I usually don't go out of my way to look for lunatics who do not believe that 1+1=2.

Right from the beginning of your message you showed that you are not very well educated. I've given you advise but you just can't deviate. Go and look at threads about yoruba "history", tell me where any Edo is invited to give his input ! Go and look at those about igbo "history", only Igbos are invited, same with haussa, but of course for Benin history you need to invite two yoruba supremacists who hate Benin. I guess in your mind Benin people don't have the right to own Benin heritage unlike all others who have the right to their heritage.

Look, you know what, make your thread about something other than Benin, I've had enough of people like you, just leave us and our history alone. Your purpose is not intellectual, you just want an e-war with us Edo as the people to be trolled.
