Richard Slayman's journey began on March 16, 2024, when he underwent a four-hour surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital to receive a genetically-edited pig kidney. This procedure was a significant step in xenotransplantation and offered hope for those in need of organ transplants.

Slayman had previously received a human kidney transplant, but after five years, it failed due to his ongoing battle with diabetes and high blood pressure. Despite the risks, Slayman's recovery from the pig kidney transplant went smoothly, and he was discharged less than three weeks after the surgery, giving hope to millions suffering from kidney failure.
