Hello. can you give a bit more detail about your car? Right now, all that's clear is that it's a Volkswagen Passat B6 1,984 cc TFSI. Some details about the problem will help too.

The Volkswagen Vento and Volkswagen Golf III are mechanically similar, with the Vento being a booted version of the Golf, which is a hatchback. Whichever you pick will depend on the intended use. Saloon is more of a family car, the hatchback is more sport-oriented, and with a hatch, easier to get large, bulky items into the luggage compartment.

Cheap to buy and run, I would avoid the 1,4 models. With a meagre 60 hp, they are slow, and the engines work hard in the heavy body, which raises fuel consumption to alarming levels for such a small engine.

My pick would be the 1,6 / 1,8 SPFi (Single-Point Fuel Injection). This is as close to a carburetted model as you'll ever get, the Golf III and Vento were only available as fuel-injected cars. Avoid converted carburettor models, they're thirsty, and these conversions bring their own set of issues. The 2,0 models are not much quicker, just burn more gas. If you want performance, then the 2,0 GTI 8 or 16V models are great, not to be confused with the regular 2,0 GL.

My preferred transmission would be manual, they are simplicity itself, with nothing to go wrong. All bar the 2,0 GTI 16V have cable-operated clutch, so easy for even the fairly handy DIY user to work on. With a Repair Manual, you can cut down trips to a mechanic to a minimum, the engine bays are large, as they were designed to accept the range-topping 2,8 / 2,9 VR6. So with an I4 motor, lots of room to work, with easy access to commonly-replaced items.

Not much goes wrong on these cars, the most common issue being the central locking. It is vacuum-operated, and leaks are common. Most frequent source of leaks is where the vacuum pipe goes through the driver's door into the body (by the hinges). The pipe can split, but repairs are easy.

I've not given any details on the Audi "Tiger Face", as I have no idea what that model is. undecided

I want to sell this not because it is faulty or its giving me problem, its because i am in urgent need of money, honestly if i can obtain loan i will never never and never sell the car because of its ruggedness, cheap and always available part, lower fuel consumption among others. it is stil neat and u dont need to do anything on it than to fuel and start using immediately.

I have a VW Passat V6 4motion 2002 model, I hear a rattling and knocking sound each time I am driving on a rough road. The sound is from the drivers side wheel, and each time I am making a sharp bend the OBD will display brake failure with a warning peeeep!! Sound. Although the brake will be functioning properly. A road side mechanic, said it is the tie rod, and he change it in my presence. The sound is still coming from the same wheel and the brake failure is still displaying if I make a bend. Please Oga Siena help me unravel this situation. Thank you.

The brake warning when taking corners is due to low brake fluid level. There's a lever sensor in the plastic resovoir with a float. When the fluid is low and you take corners, the sloshing action causes the float to drop briefly, enough to illuminate the warning.

Brake fluid drops for two main reasons - a leak, and worn brake pads. With a leak, your brake will be pretty bad, with a soft pedal. Since your brakes are working well, I would say your pads need looking at, and replacing if more than 50% worn. That will sort out the warning light.

The knocking won't be your "tie rods", as suggested by your dodgy roadside mechanic. It'll be your lower arms. There are two per side, a straight and curved one. The curved ones are at the rear of the front wheels, while the straight ones are at the front. The straight ones are interchangeable from left to right, the curved ones are specific to left and right.

Do not fit used items here! These are a known failure item, and any car that's done over 80,000 miles WILL need these arms replacing. You can't feel how good the joints and bushes are by hand, they may feel nice and tight, but will have excessive movement when fitted to the car. So removing from a used car to fit to yours is an absolute waste of your time, and money! The Volkswagen Passat, like the Audi A4, A6 and A8 is a heavy car, and not too kind to suspension components, even when driven in countries with smooth roads. Combine the weight of the car with Nigeria's crumbling road network, and they wear out much faster.

For reference, I've attached an extract from Volkswagen / Audi's EPC. You need items #1 and #21.

Volkswagen Passat 4,0 W8, 250 bhp.

Aircon high pressure line erruption.

When you say "blow out", do you mean the pipe under the right front bumper began to leak, or it actually errupted audibly? That corner also houses the receiver drier, and is the most common area of leaks. The small O-ring seal on top of the receiver drier can perish, and cause loss of gas. The other area in that same corner is the lower pipe-to-condenser seal / join.

a) Check the pipe-to-condenser, this is a particularly leak-prone area. It is also common for the union to seize, and when trying to undo the large nut (aluminium) it is all too easy to twist the end of the condenser. This can weaken it, to the point it later bursts.

b) Check the receiver drier (cannister) top pipe seal. Note, all seals / O-rings used in aircon joints MUST be green or lilac. These are specific to any system that runs R123-A. The gas molecules are so tiny, the use of the more common black O-rings is not adviced, as they will not hold the gas for long.

Any leaks will most likely leave a yellow-green oily residue - providing PAG oil and the yellow dye was added when last the system was charged. I'm willing to bet your leak is in one of the two areas I've mentioned. Either the old O-rings were re-used, or the wrong (black) ones were used.

Please check the above, and get back to me. For reference, I'm attaching a diagram of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat 4,0 W8 aircon system, including pipework, receiver drier, condenser and compressor. Components are as follows:

Receiver drier: #22.
Condenser: #3.
Compressor: Above #26.
Pipe-to-condenser seal: #58.
Pipe-to-receiver drier seal: #55.
Pipes-to-compressor seals: 15 & 15a.

Check all the seal areas for leaks. When your compressor, condenser, pressure switch etc were replaced back in '09, what was actually wrong with your air con system? It just seems a lot to replace in one hit, to resolve...?

Hi Siena,
I am so sorry. Its unbelievable i never saw this your response until now. My W8 is still same. Do you have a clue where I can take this vehicle to in Abuja to get it sorted. If not. Would you consider investing in a Volkswagen Service centre in Abuja to meet the needs of teeming volkswagen owners that just do not have where to take their vehicles for service and repair. The responses you are getting from your thread clearly demonstrates that their is a gap to be filled.I willing to partner you in this regard - Equity and resources, etc. My W8 is an awesome performance vehicle. Nothing I have driven comes close. I want to get this ride to its pristine condition.pls revert. Thanks

Seguneji: Hi siena, I want to buy a 2001 VW golf 4 V5 engine automatic transmiSsion american spec. Is it a good choice, I really need ur advice asap. Thanks in anticipation

I love the VW Golf IV 2,3 V5. No known issues with the chain-driven engine, though in view of the fact this car's for use in Nigeria, where the average mechanic goes pale at the sight of a conventional 3,0 V6 stuffed into a Toyota Camry...the complex 15-degree VR5 will certainly cause some serious head scratching. No "converting" this one to carburettor!

If you intend to use a proper Volkswagen Service Centre (recommended) it'll be an excellent buy, the smooth 5-cylinder motor is as strong as the VR6 it's based on, just not user-friendly if you're one to cheap out on maintenance.

hello siena,

my car is an Audi a6
model year: 2002
quattro
v6, 30v.
tiptronic.
i have also attached a picture.

1. i have installed an aftermarket 18inch wheel with matching kumho 225/40 zr18 tires all round. but i have since had to change my transmission twice , the first time due to leakage and incompetent technicians , the second time i really cant say. it just stopped working. i have now fixed a new one and it seems to be working fine. i used mobil transmission fluid this time around. i was using abro before thanks to idiotic technicians. what i would like to know is what could be responsible for such . could it be my tyres affecting the transmission or type of fliud?

2. since i changed my front brake pads my break light comes on once i start moving after a loud warning alarm.

3. my ABS light is always on.
4. My check engine light is on too.
5. how do i get an audi workshop manual and diagnostic tool.
6. the car is rather sluggish for me, any simple mods to make it faster.

Re: The Audi And Volkswagen Issues Resolution Thread by Nobody: 12:29pm On Sep 28, 2012
Nothing wrong with your choice of wheels, there's no correlation between the change, and your subsequent transmission failure.

1) Your transmission is a ZF5HP19-A. There are two separate fluids - one for the differential, the other for the transmission itself. Both are NOT interchangeable.

The fluid in the differential is the most common to leak. It leaks from the left-hand output shaft (to driveshaft), or the rear output shaft (to propeller). Cause is a worn oil seal. The symptoms of leaks are the smell of burning oil, as it drips onto the left-hand catalyst. If it is ignored, over a period of time the oil level will drop sufficiently for the differential to become noisy, and it will eventually fail, due to damaged bearings.

If your mechanic put Mobil ATF into your transmission, that will kill it. If that's what's in your current transmission, expect an expensive repair. Audi does NOT use ATF in the transmission!! It uses a specif fluid.

2) Do your replacement brake pads have pad wear indicators? I'm assuming the warning is for the brake, pads, and NOT the ABS. If your old pads have wear indicators, and the replacements dont, the warning will activate.

3) I'm inclined to link this to problem #2. If the warning in #2 only comes on when the car begins to move, then you have an ABS issue, could be a duff wheel speed sensor, or faulty combined ABS hydraulic modulator / ECM. A scan will tell. If it's a wheel speed sensor, live data will tell which sensor has zero reading (in km/h).

4) I can only advice a scan, rather than guess, and ill-advice you.

5) I can get you a manual and diag. for Audi.

6) With 193 hp, your Audi A6 won't be a rapid car, but progress should still be brisk. With your check engine light illuminated, don't expect optimum performance, It's most likely in limp mode, and it would be unwise to drive it hard, until the issues are resolved.

@ siena, thanks for your quick response . i appreciate ur commitment. i cannot afford to spend a dime on that transmission again. is there still a way to remedy the situation. can you recommend the exact fluid am to use and where i can get it. you can email me on olanree008@gmail.com about the manual and diag. i rili love the car and want to keep it or maybe trade it for a 4.2liter a6.

Volkswagen Golf 1.6 SPI.

I need to be clear what you're referring to. You say the clutch pedal was not "dropping completely." Could you please be specific? Because I'm not clear what you mean.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the hydraulic clutch on your Volkswagen Golk IV. Clutch cables were junked for a reason - crude operation. Cable clutch generally has a stiffer clutch pedal. Your "mechanic" shouldn't even be wielding a spanner near a wheel barrow, if he's suggesting you wreck your car by "converting" a VW Golf IV to cable clutch. If you're going to a rubbish mechanic as a cost-cutting exercise, then please sell your car, and buy a '86 Toyota Corolla with a 1.6 carburettor engine, and a cable clutch.

Or take your car to a Volkswagen Service Centre. Yes, they'll charge you for the priviledge, but that's the way it is - you can't run your car on a shoestring. Oh, and while you're looking for a solution to your problem, get a DECENT technician to check the gearbox oil level. And look at the differential casing for any cracks, or holes.

Hi Sienna,

Good job you're doing here.

I'm about to buy a VW Toureg 2005 model. It will be my first with a VW SUV.

Pls are there things I should watch out for?

What is the cost of maintainance and running cost like?

I have not enjoyed my Range Rover 2004 but have had a fab experience with my Toyota Landcruiser 2000.

Should I stick with Toyota (though the interior is uninspiring) or will the Toureg make a good buy?

Tnx.

Hello sir.
i have a golf 3,American specs, 1.8 engine, 1998 model, GTI, automatic transmission. it use Golf2 automatic gearbox. the problem are:
1. anytime i start the engine, i hear some sound at the timing belt , fuel pump and power steering belt side as is if the wheel is touching a metal while rolling.
2. while moving the vehicle, i hear some sound from the gearbox side when i press the throttle harder. but at soft press no sound will come.
3. As soon as i put the gear to 'drive' the car starts vibrating.
4. The car does not move faster than others types i have driven. it sluggishly moves unlike when you press others.
5. the gear changes normal, but when the brake is matched it takes time before it start gathering speed. Although this does not happen sometimes.
6. Above all it consumes fuel.
some friends told me it could be the electric carburetor while others say the it could be the gearbox leather or clutch plate.

please, i need your help urgently.

thanks.
