A friend told me its bad that calling him DADDY is better. Does Uncle sounds despicable? I thought its a respectful name for your mum or dad's bigbrother or younger

Despicable is a strong word there.

Depends on what operates in the family and/or circumstances sorrounding you. It may be a big deal in some families while it won't in others. We all used to call my dad's younger brother 'uncle' till recently after my dad's death. As if we had a meeting on it, we just switched from 'uncle' to 'daddy'.In other Yoruba families I know, it's almost a taboo to call your father or mother's brothers/sisters uncle/aunt. They see it as a sign of disrespect. They want to be called daddy/mummy too. That's why we have so many daddies and mummies in Yoruba families. (Don't know if same operates in other ethnic groups in Nigeria.)

Personally, I'd call them what they like/want. Doesn't add or take anything away from me.

whether the man likes it or not, in this situation, he is an uncle, not a daddy!

In my husbands culture, fulani, the bigger brothers of your father is referred to as Bappa, as in big father.
The younger brothers are uncles.

On the mothers side, its uncle( cow ), and auntie ( yaye ).

In Norway, uncle our aunt is the proper thing.

What else would you call ypour mom's brother, younger or older, other than uncle? Because that's what he is, unless I'm missing something here.
