We've received calls from some prospective clients about purchase of cars and custom duty and we'll like to post this official statement.
1.Travelling to and from Cotonou has been made easy because we've a car registered in REP. OF BENIN,all that's needed is paying the driver for fuel and other expenses which is 5,000Naira.
2.We will never encourage or allow customers buy cars into Nigeria without custom duty,they're free to use other agents.Over the years we've seen customers accuse agents of either short paying customs or not paying at all but what they'll never tell people is that they were also guilty,because some customers will not want to pay duty on cars and when they start driving in Nigeria and it's seized,they turn around to blame the agent.So cars will either be left in the parks or custom's office till when duty has been paid.
3.A customer must sign official documents backed by a lawyer immediately his/her car has been delivered,the document is proof that the car was delivered in good condition and all necessary documentations were done.
3.If a customer decides to use another agent for clearance of cars,another document must be signed to indicate he/she decided to use another agent.
4. We'll not help prospective clients bring contrabands stored in their cars into Nigeria.
5.Customers are advised to travel in Cotonou with means of identification e:g Passports,voters card etc.

People have kept calling on the issue of custom duty on cars coming in from cotonou.
One customer asked if he has to pay duty again in lagos.
My answer is NO.
The Customs command has various commands and with the new mordernization project,all commands are now linked to a central database in abuja,which means wherever you get your duty papers done,it's logged in a central server in Abuja.
Every command has a specific target set for them and duty is part of the way they raise revenue,the reason why people think duty from Lagos ports are the only original papers is just because lagos is a central point and most people are used to it.
Documents have been posted on this thread to show custom duty papers obtained from idiroko and seme border points are also genuine.
All you need to do is before you go into cotonou,walk with your agent into the office or ask for the current rates,go into cotonou,pick up your car and park in the designated place so you can get it accessed,after assessments,you pay into banks,make sure it's logged and you get your certificate form their command.
It's very easy like ABC,you don't need to obtain another duty in lagos,it's like bringing in your car through lagos ports and you want to obtain duty certificate from idiroko,you can only obtain at the car's specific point of entry.

Today we'll like to solve another issue about purchasing your car from cotonou.
Some people are still confused about the type of cars sold in Cotonou and they've been asking for cotonou used cars,which we'll like to clear.
There's no such thing as cotonou used cars,the same way tokunbo cars are brought in from lagos ports is the same way cars are brought into ports in cotonou and moved to various parks.
Like we posted earlier,the only licenced dealers allowed to operate in these parks are whites and arabs,while people who are either citizens of Rep of Benin or have ties with the country are allowed to be agents.Rep of Benin isn't a lawless country and they operate by the book,which means an outsider can't register his/her business in the parks and the three parks occupy at least 1,200 hectares of land,so there's no way you'll have a specific budget and not get a car/jeep/truck to buy.
On the used car issue,our prospective customers are advised not to patronise touts or unlicensed agents,so many cars are stolen in Nigeria and brought into Cotonou and sold by the roadsides but not in the parks,note NOT IN THE PARKS,because the whites/Arabs will not buy from an african,they'll rather bring cars into Cotonou through ports.
One'll want to spend millions on a car and also spend money for SARS in Nigeria only because they brought cars from non-authorised agents or dealers.

Some customers have kept asking why cars are so cheap in Cotonou compared to cars sold in Lagos state,some even ask if the cars sold are substandard cars.

So today, we will be using a particular brand as an example,Toyota highlander 2004 model with navigation which is sold in Lagos between 2.2-2.3m while from Cotonou,it's between 1.8-1.9m with original custom duty certificate and can even be gotten lower than 1.8m.

LAGOS STATE CARS-

When an highlander is been imported through Nigerian ports e:g Lagos port,there are other fees the importer has to pay apart from the normal custom duty,fees like gate fees,shipping and terminal fees etc.After bringing the jeep out from the port,if the importer doesn't have a car stand he as to hand over the highlander to a dealer who has a registered car stand,note the importer is looking for profit while the dealer is also looking for profit in two ways,one a fee from the importer for using his stand and also from the actual sale of the jeep.
if the importer has his personal stand,other dealers who have interest will still come around to check the jeep out and also look for customers and before you know it a jeep the importer wants to sell for 1.9M becomes 2.3m because there are several dealers looking for profit.

Cotonou Parks-

Most of the cars sold in the three main parks have been cleared by the importers and it's done cheaply because the authorities in Rep. of Benin charge less for cars/jeeps brought into the the country.

After clearing the highlander at the port,it's driven into the importers park where it is sold.

Now the advantage gained from Cotonou parks are numerous-

1. There are no dealers involved,you are dealing with the importer.
2. Parks in Cotonou cover a total of 1,500 hectares,which means at least in a park,there are almost 20 highlander 2004 model you can choose from.
3.We at Jelad Ventures will help you get the highlander without adding to the importer's price,all we charge is 5,000 for transportation into Cotonou and back to Nigeria and transaction fees after your car/jeep has been cleared by customs at the Nigerian border.
4. There several park fees you've to pay but the lovely part is they are already added to the price of the car you're buying,so there are no hassles.

king david,i am sorry for replying you so late,i just got out of the market and i am now at the customs' office in idiroko,ogun state.

Like i always tell my customers when they make inquiries,it is always better you show up physically to check cars and you can spend a whole day going round the three parks searching around for a car but i can call you and give you prices of the cars with the cost of duty.

you know your taste and what you want actually want in a car/jeep.If i send 100 pictures to you,it still comes down to the fact that we'll not go into direct negotiations with the importer unless you're present and we don't accept cash payment to help people buy cars,they have to physically see,check and be satisfied with what they want to buy before payment,so it's not about sending pictures,it is about you been on ground to witness the process.
