CONFAB : Igbo Youths Insist On Referendum. by PhockPhockMan: 3:09am On Aug 19, 2014 |
IGBO youths under the aegis of Ohanaeze Youth Congress have restated its earlier position that a referendum be conducted to make way for the implementation of the recommendations of the National Conference. National President of the OYC, Ikechukwu Isiguzoro, while speaking with our correspondent in Umuahia, Abia State capital, on Monday, warned President Goodluck Jonathan against forwarding the confab’s report to the National Assembly, saying that “such action would amount to suicide mission as most lawmakers were waiting to kill the report.” “It is not a secret that the undemocratic elements in the National Assembly, who feel uncomfortable because of the new dawn about to be ushered in, have concluded plans to use their majority to kill the confab’s report, and Mr. President should not play into their hands,” Isiguzoro said. He advised the President to either utilise his executive power to set up a Constituent Assembly, which he said would ratify the report of the conference or to direct the Independent National Electoral Commission to organise a referendum on the recommendations. According to the Igbo youths, the outcome of the National Conference is more important to Nigerians than the 2015 elections because “the recommendations, when implemented, would permanently plug most of the issues that frequently cause friction in our polity.” The leader of the youths further urged Jonathan to complete the “epochal cycle he initiated as the midwife of a new Nigeria by ensuring that the outcome of the conference, unlike the previous ones, was not thrown into the cabbage can of history “. “Even if the implementation of the confab’s report costs Jonathan his second term bid , it is heroic because he will ever be remembered as the father of new Nigeria,” Isiguzoro added. He commended the South-East delegates to the conference for their unity in canvassing the interest of Ndigbo and Nigeria at large, saying that “Igbo delegates at the confab deserve honour for not letting the tribe down.” http://www.punchng.com/news/confab-igbo-youths-insist-on-referendum/ 1 Like |

PhockPhockMan: Ok, true federalism, state police, additional state for South East, upward review of derivation etc. The clandestine document surreptitiously smuggled into the confab and labelled "constitution " will never fly. The states in the SE are too small already and those 5 states should actually be merged into 2 or 3 states only. We can never allow additional state in the SE , it is already too difficult to see the current tiny states on the map of Nigeria. 3 Likes |

PhockPhockMan: If only south west will support the move. The so called north has held the country hostage for long period, and it will never continue. On referendum we stand. South west won't support illegality, the south west as always call for a SOVERIGNE NATIONAL CONFERENCE and not the charade president jona put together to deceived people like you. Were the delegate to national conference selected through referendum or elected by the people to represent them in the first place? Or you think for a northern, mallam waziri maina to move that all their talk in the conference is just a resolution and proposer to the same 1999 constitution that is the problem of nigeria and not a brand new constitution is a joke? They should just send their resolution to the National assembly as an amendment just like many other proposers that are still pending at the assembly. @Adindupeter just give an insight to what will happen @ the end of the day. 2 Likes |

PhockPhockMan: Ok, true federalism, state police, additional state for South East, upward review of derivation etc. If there is true federalism, there won't be need for upward review of oil derivation, there won't be much clamouring on state creation, because the state will be in control of their resources 4 Likes |

fkaz:Is it the illegality of Jonathan in setting up the conference or is it the recommendations of the conference itself that is the problem of the southwest??.. Me thinks the recommendations of the conference are perfectly in line with the clamour of the southwest right from the onset, so why the opposition?... When will the SE, SS and SW every learn to dump their madness and understand that they need to unite if they must achieve any progress against the setback of the North? 1 Like |

PhockPhockMan: Ok, true federalism, state police, additional state for South East, upward review of derivation etc. Okay I see... However if not for the inherent stomach politics practised all over Nigeria, I see no need for an addition state in the southeast. True federalism nullifies the need for an upward review of derivation. It also cancels the need for additional mushroom sized states (if only we can put aside our rice and beans politics)... There would also be no need for the state police clamour as this would almost automatically be solved by true federalism. 3 Likes |

Can South East ever see its own initiative to completion without begging for involvement in West? West never bring out an initiative hoping South East will piggyback to make it a success. You can ride your own initiative to completion independently of anyone. What are you afraid of? 4 Likes |

obailala: Am not opposing the out come of the conference, The truth is that, the conference can not give nigeria a new constitution with out an amendment from national assembly to give way for referendum in the present 1999 constitution. Then we can now elect and not the president selecting those that will represent me and you. |
