^ Kindly answer the question(s) above you |
Re: Any HSE Professionals In The House? by Kindy: 12:39am On Feb 01, 2012 |
@Yamakuza, NEBOSH IGC has become a minimum requirement for those wanting to be health and safety practitioners and recently, employers of labour also indicate this while advertising such jobs. If one should attend the NEBOSH class and subsequently pass the exams, it means that the individual understands the regulations, acts and laws both nationally and internationally applicable to occupational health and safety. It also indicates the individual understands international best practices. I have seen employers who would prefer to employ a fresh graduate with nebosh IGC and allow him to grow with the organization which means its an added advantage for health and safety job seekers. Though it is a superb support for the man in the field already but it is now a requirement. We have had the opportunity to source for safety officers for organizations both in Nigeria and Kuwait and frankly these employers only requested for those with nebosh IGC and two years experience. If you don't have a nebosh IGC and get a job as a safety officer, you would also learn from the job, but with nebosh IGC, getting the job is easier because it is a requirement and getting the experience while you work would be easier and believe me a fresh graduate with NISP level 3 safety awareness cannot compete with a fresh graduate with nebosh IGC in terms of employment. I hope I've been able to communicate. Kindy. |

Hello Everyone, This week, I featured an Environmental practitioner as the "Professional of The Week"It was a very nice interview, he talked about the profession as well as skills and professional certification such as NISP, NEBOSH, IEMA. Read on and be inspired. Professional of The Week: An Environmental Engineer This week, we're featuring an Environmental Engineer as the "Professional of The Week". It was yet another enlightening interview and I encourage every professional or budding professional out there to read on. Name: Jima Okori Location (state): Rivers State Profession: Environmental Engineering 1. Why did you choose Environmental Engineering as your profession? Well, my dream as a child was to be a pilot and as I grew it changed to Mechanical Engineering. However, while I was undergoing admission into university, complications during the process led me to Industrial Sciences. After my Undergraduate degree, my interest in engineering was still very much alive and my dad, a Chemical Engineer by profession, advised that Environmental Engineering would be best suited based on my chemistry background. So, I went for a Masters in Environmental Engineering Technology, specialising in Environmental Analysis and Assessment. Excellent thread. You guys have done a great job here. Got on to this thread while researching HSE career prospects and options for a mentee. It appears the focus here is more on Health and Safety. This tends to suggest that the "Environment" aspect of the discipline is still in its infancy in Nigeria or is not very much appreciated. Also, I suspect a dearth of interest in "Environment" here and hence the near zero information in that area. Associate Certificate in Environmental Management from IEMA and IEMA Diploma might be good value for money for those interested in the the E aspect of HSE. You may wish to visit http://www.iema.net for more details. I am not a HSE practitioner but it does appear that IEMA certifications are as prestigious as Nebosh and if not more because candidates who have successfully completed the NEBOSH Diploma in Environmental Management after the 1st January 2008 may apply to IEMA for Associate membership. Candidates who completed the course prior to 1st January 2008 are not eligible for this membership level. Refer to NEBOSH website - http://www.nebosh.org.uk/qualifications/diploma/default.asp?cref=74&ct=2 Hope someone finds this useful. 1 Like |

Hey, professionals in the house. I just got to this link now, and I thought it will be nice to register my presence. I am a Chemical Engineer/Environmental Engineer. I am also an Environmental Management/Safety Management professional (NEBOSH certified) currently practising in the UK. From now onward, I'll love to be an active member of this forum as long as reasonable discussions are made here. Thanks for putting this up! |
Re: Any HSE Professionals In The House? by yamakuza: 2:48pm On Feb 11, 2012 |
Kabai: like what and what discussions pls? From duintes' observation, theres little of the Environmental aspect going on here right now, so you both might have to spearhead the discourse. I welcome you both onboard! |

Hello house, I've been following this thread for a while and recently my interest in HSE got peeked by my friend who is keen on taking up a course especially the NEBOSH certification. I have a degree in marketing and coming from that background, what are my chances of making the best of the profession and where do you advise I start from ?? I just needed to ask because I have already started gathering materials for NEBOSH to start preparing well ahead of time for September as I'm considering a change swift change in my career path to get the much anticipated satisfaction (not monetary). Your kind and honest advise are welcomed. Thank you. |
