Reps move to stop $3bn World Bank loan
Wednesday, November 12, 2008

House of Representatives yesterday move to stop the proposed $3 billion World Bank loan offered to Nigerian government for the development of infrastructure and also directed its Committee on Governmental Affairs, Justice and Judiciary to, as a matter of urgency, identify those qualified to use siren in the country and report back within two week

Following the outrage that greeted the assault on Miss Uzoma Okere by Naval ratings on the convoy of a Naval Officer, Vice Admiral Harry Arogundade in Lagos, the House in a motion moved by Hon. Habeeb Keshinro [AC], Lagos condemned the action of the Naval men in all ramifications, describing it as barbaric, uncivilized and condemnable.

Leading debate on the motion after the suspension of Rules 4 and 8, Fasinro said the action of the ratings was an outright abuse of the rights of the victim, especially when an officer of the rank of Vice Admiral watched them assaulting the girl without intervention.

Regretting that the news of the assault was celebrated by foreign media, Fasinro declared that such actions should not be allowed to happen in a country that preaches rule of law which according to him means equity, fairness and justice.

Hon. Chile Igbawua (PDP Benue) condemned the action of the Naval Ratings and informed the House that he was already in consultations with other members working on a Bill seeking to restrict the use of siren to certain category of public office holders.

Hon. Bala Ibn Na’Allah decried the attitude of leaders who scare ordinary people away from the road, noting that the action of the Naval men deserves summary dismissal.

Chairman Rules and Business Committee, Hon Ita Enang cited instances where he was harassed by security details of the Senate president and a careless manners in which the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission [FRSC] conducted himself when visited the National Assembly as an embarrassment.

In another motion moved by Hon Dino Melaye [PDP] Kogi State, which will be debated today, members felt that such facility was not in the best interest of the nation, going by past experience.

Meanwhile, the bill for an Act to regulate the transportation of Animals, prevent undue pain and suffering in Animals used in food production, and for matters connected therewith was passed into second reading.
