Wigs, Weaves And Perms Symbolize Self Hate by fayahsoul: 4:12am On Nov 23, 2008 |
To all the nubian sistas in the continent and diaspora; It is past due time to let go of the weaves, wigs and perms. These acts, and love, of fakeness have far reaching consequences that is not readily realizable to the narrow minded whom engage in such demeaning acts. -It is a health risk: these relaxers, moisturizers, texturizers and all that other crap that you dump on your hair( to alter the nine ether structure) are all loaded with toxins and carcinogens which seep into your blood stream via the scalp. -Economically unsound: it contributes to financial capital flight out of our communities and into the asian(korean especially) communities, -Sacrilegious: it involves the desecration of the temple of "God"(your body) and therefore it's immoral; hence, punishable, -Psychological defect: It is a subconscious expression of self hate and a deep seated sense of inferiority complex that gets passed on to your seeds through the agents socialization; this makes it a psychological problem that must be tackled head on, -Counter-productive: all these cosmetics, surgery and other miscellaneous techniques and ingridents you apply on your person in a futile attempt to "beautify", does not make you any prettier rather it diminishes your true natural beauty. These treatments make you go bald before 40yrs. Stop embarrasing and deceiving yourselves and have some dignity for a change. Stay real and natural. 2 Likes |

I love my wigs. . . hardly use them I love my perms . . . get them all the time I love my weaves. . . have one on right now. Health issue - No one has died from excess use of moisturizer on either skin or scalp. Financial issue - Technically, Asians make cars too. . . should we stop buying cars then? Nigeria should make their own hair products if it makes them feel so good. Sacrilegious - not all of us are christians and for those of us that are, it talks about not putting tattoos or permanent marks on our bodies as desecrating God's temple. Premarital sex does that too . . . why not preach that first? Psychological - It increases one's self esteem and improves one's body image. Any questions? 2 Likes |

fayahsoul:Deodorants do alter the sweat glands. . . . Same goes for shaving blades that causes bruises on the face. fayahsoul:If women give up weaves, wig, and perms, then I suggest the men give up trying to find hair regrowth solution and I'd suggest Viagra/ steroid producers stop making their products. fayahsoul:So many people are worried about the recession, ecomony crunch etc, you're worried about perms and wigs. Go figure! I just wonder when the hair regrowth for men advertisement will stop showing on my TV screen. fayahsoul:So many products are health risks. Your cell phone, your car, soda, salt, etc. Well, I do understand your point. Too much perm is health risk, but what I don't get is how it's associated with self-hate. If you were a woman, you'd understand how touch it is for a black woman to keep her natural hair. well, some black women. I can go 4-5 months without perm. My hair is soft. . . but hard to manage after a while. Hard to comb, to make into a style etc. Does it mean I hate myself? no. My appearance is also my characteristic. The way I take care of myself, esp my hair, shows a lot about how clean I am. I can't dress nice with crappy hair. If perming, wearing wig/weave is immoral, then we might as well say wearing condoms, getting out immunization shot, wearing glasses, etc is immoral. It's affecting the body, is it not? fayahsoul:we hear you. . . . . 1 Like |

Wigs, Weaves And Perms Symbolize Self Hate no i do not think it's self hatred.if you want to perm your hair, then that's you. i don't think afros are ugly, i just can't pull off the look and i would rather have something more manageable perming my hair gives me the ability to put my hair in many different styles. Do you also think, its self hatred that a lot of white women dye their hair, wear weaves, and get botox and tan? Instead of fizzy brown or black hair and pale skin? |
Re: Wigs, Weaves And Perms Symbolize Self Hate by savanaha: 5:06am On Nov 23, 2008 |
I agree with the giving up of the wig weave perm thingy. Most black women know this but will never admit to the fact that they do it to look more caucasian (acceptable). Some claim their hair is too rough, tough and unmanageable others claim it is cute. Why can't being your natural self be cute? It has so long been embedded that some of us can't break from the pretty hair: ugly hair spell. Others think that being natural means only wearing an afro but actually there are more natural hair styles than can be worn with weaves and perms. When I went back to school with my new natural do everyone said it was amazing but as soon as I said you can do it too. "Oh only someone like you can pull it off. . . blah blah. I enjoy being me and not being ashamed of my natural being. I haven't worn an afro yet but I know people are dying for when I will debut it. Anyways my point is going natural does not stop with afros and like India Arie said "I am not my hair." |

Re: Wigs, Weaves And Perms Symbolize Self Hate by Jakumo(m): 5:17am On Nov 23, 2008 |
Fayasoul I do agree with you somewhat about the basis for black women wearing straight-hair wigs and using acidic and possibly carcinogenic chemicals to straighten naturally frizzy hair in an effort to mimic the naturally straight hair of other races such as white, hispanic or Asian, BUT let us face it, if a black woman leaves her hair in its natural kinky state, her hair-style options would narrow down to a military close-shaven head which looks too masculine on a female, a 1960's Big Hair Afro which makes the girl's head appear twice its normal size, or plaited hair which is about as exciting to look at as a pair of copulating hedgehogs. The Naomi Cambell/ Beyonce straight-hair look has worked its way into worldwide social consciousness as a standard of black feminine beauty, and so it would take a black woman of supreme self-confidence to defy current aesthetic conventions by leaving her hair in its natural "nappy" state, what with all the funny looks she would get wherever she went. The one category of black "beauty" products that to me do signify intense self-hate are skin bleaches, which generally contain highly poisonous mercury compounds which sicken, disfigure and often kill users, and which do not EVER produce the intended result of making a black woman appear white. |

Re: Wigs, Weaves And Perms Symbolize Self Hate by KarmaMod(f): 5:24am On Nov 23, 2008 |
Jakumo: Definitely agree with you here and I dont know why those with afros or natural hair are lauded so much as being "unique". No one stares at a woman with an afro/kinky twist, etc. If indeed they are staring NEGATIVELY, it's most likely your face. Nonsense I just took out my braids a few hrs ago, looks like ive been electrocuted, went out and there were no weird "omg why isnt her hair permed?!" looks so spare us the rubbish |

and when the white women apply a perm, hair color, wear curls or tan their skin, they hate themselves. let these au naturel macy gray -like, erika badu-like ,India arie-like girls leave us alone. not all of like afro not all of us like using cast Iron combs on our hair na by force ? sheesh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

KarmaMod: And Paris Hilton the sluttiest idiot is the best example you could come up with. Yes Paris does hate herself not only when she wears that nasty crap at the end of her hair but also the sex video she let out (since we are bringing out irrelevant things). |
Re: Wigs, Weaves And Perms Symbolize Self Hate by KarmaMod(f): 5:51am On Nov 23, 2008 |
what does her sex life have to do with the fact that white women also wear weaves The was the point, what the hell does sex tape have to do with anything They are worn for versatility. If your hair is short and you wnat it long for an evet, you can. If you want it short for an event, instead of cutting your own hair, you can get a short weave. If anyone is bringing in irrelevant crap its you |
Re: Wigs, Weaves And Perms Symbolize Self Hate by savanaha: 5:53am On Nov 23, 2008 |
Jakumo: O.k having natural hair does not only leave the options of plait and afro. Apart from that its not like perming your hair gives this wealth of options. Its just straight like white peoples the end. The only thing thrilling about having straight hair like white people is just that. The straighter it is the more compliments on it you get and thats why the likes of Naomi Campbell and Beyonce are accepted. Heck even Tyra says that one of the reason she has gotten as far as she has is because of the straight haired weave she wears. Tyra admitted it on t.v so lets stop pretending. |

HR.hotness: People who liked themselves don't try to change themselves. They adore what makes them different and don't pay crap loads of cash to change and fit in. Its those that want to be accepted that assimilate. Angelina Jolie's supposed thick lips makes her unique and she has never tried to change them. Some black people with the original thick lips are made fun of, some want to change their lips. 1 Like |

KarmaMod: Karma, Alek Wek is so masculine looking that only a gay man could ever really find "her" sexy. She was deliberately elevated to the status of a super model just to SPITE all black women, by reminding them just what they would look like if they retained natural frizzy hair. Like Savanah mentioned, Tyra Banks, on the other hand, has a look that would reduce most men to pleading, 3-legged horn-dogs, and WHO CARES what she does to her hair or body to look so devastatingly sexy. |
Re: Wigs, Weaves And Perms Symbolize Self Hate by savanaha: 6:06am On Nov 23, 2008 |
*osisi: Yes they are also putting harmful chemicals to be accepted, thus self hate. In terms of the cast iron crap, that is also self hate. . . it was invented during slavery to straighten hair and be more acceptable to the white masters. 1 Like |
Re: Wigs, Weaves And Perms Symbolize Self Hate by KarmaMod(f): 6:06am On Nov 23, 2008 |
Jakumo: I dont think Wek is masculine at all. Infact her face is very childish. Tyra got in cos of her colored eyes. Not her hair. when she first started modeling, she did NOT wear weaves. |
Re: Wigs, Weaves And Perms Symbolize Self Hate by savanaha: 6:10am On Nov 23, 2008 |
KarmaMod: The sex tape has to do with the irrelevance of bringing up Paris Hilton who has done enough idiotic things that it is obvious she has self issues. Now if you mentioned some self respecting white woman I will tell you that they probably wear weave extension that long like their natural hair. Blacks wear weaves most of the time that look nothing like their natural hair. |

Karma, abi ooo I just took out my ghana braids. Went out to go buy some more conditioner, see me see trouble. If you the looks I was getting, una think plague don enter body. Tried the whole "Natural" hair thing for a while. It was glamorous the first few months, but soon after, I was taking headache medicine from all the intense combing I had to do. What I don't get is why those who go for that "Natural" look have this "Holier Than Thou" attitude. As if their one act of "self-improvement" places them onto a pedistoole. Tufiakwa. |
Re: Wigs, Weaves And Perms Symbolize Self Hate by savanaha: 6:14am On Nov 23, 2008 |
KarmaMod: Alex Wek is not on the level of Tyra for a reason and that was what Tyra was alluding to. Their are many beautiful black women who will never reach to the level of Beayonce unless they take the route she has taken. Light skin and getting lighter with long straight or curly weave that keeps getting bigger ( like when she had that silly lions mane and wore it to an award show). |
