Question:

I suffer more than 12 hours power cut per day, Normal inverters could not get full charge with this severe power cuts,

I want to go for Solar inverter,

My load preference is 1 Fan, 3 CFL’s (compact fluorescent light, energy-saving light) and 1 LCD Tv.

Could you guide me on installing a Solar inverter set up at affordable cost?

Answer:

I Appreciate your interest on solar green energy. Hopefully it will be the future of power back up industry.

For a Limited budget, I could suggest you best possible and cost effective configuration.

I am 100% sure that SOLAR inverter is the only solution for growing power cut problems.

So sit back while I walk you through how to set up a small solar power for your home

Here are the materials we will need to do this set up.

a. Inverter (850VA-1KVA), 12V.......40-45k
b. One 200-250w Solar Panel.....40-60k
c. One 12V 100AH Deep Cycle Battery....30-40k (You may use two car batteries here but must be connected in parallel)
d. 12V,20A Solar Charge Controller....10-15k
e. Battery Stand, you may improvise this.

Total: Between 120k and 160k

Course Outline:
a. Mount your solar panel
b. Connect your charge controller
c. Connect Battery to Inverter
d. Connect Battery to Charge Controller
e. Load your house.

I will provide details shortly about this course.

a. Mount your solar panel

Here you may require some level of help from those guys who "roof" houses to enable the solar panel firmly nailed or screwed to your roof "before breeze go carry am go...lol".

To have maximum harvest of sun rays by the solar, please place it where you can have direct sunlight especially when sunlight is the most during the day.

When the solar panel is exposed to a direct sunlight, it should give you at least 26v if you use your multimeter or voltmeter to measure its voltage.

b. Connect your charge controller

The current we get from solar panels will not remain constant throughout the day, so many ups and downs will be there, so that we can not connect solar photo voltaic modules directly to charge our battery, it will spoil our battery over time.

So, we need a device called solar charge controller to control the current we receive from solar panels, the charge controller has inbuilt PWM (pulse width modulation) charger to charge the lead acid battery in three stages, which ensures long life for battery.

The charge controller has three connecting points for Solar Panel(s), Battery and Direct Current(DC). In this tutorial, we will use only the first two.

If you look at the back of the solar panel in the first step (a. Mount your solar panel) diagram above, you will see two wires, they are positive (+) and negative (-) respectively. Connect them to where solar panel is indicated on the charge controller, connect positive to positive, negative to negative.

c. Connect Battery to Inverter

We all know that a battery has two terminals, positive (+) and negative (-), at the back of your inverter, you will see where 12V DC input is indicated.

Connect positive (+) of the battery to the positive of the inverter and negative (-) of the battery to the negative of the inverter.

Please the inverter should remain OFF at the point.

d. Connect Battery to Charge Controller

As stated above, the Charge Controller has positive (+) and negative (-) terminals for the battery, connect positive (+) from the charge controller to the positive for the battery and negative (-) from the charge controller to the negative of the battery.

Ensure that all connections are firm.

e. Load your house.

CAUTION:
Please get an electrician to separate the load intended for the inverter, so that the inverter will not be strained or damaged when the house is powered.

i. Power the inverter, use your voltmeter to check the voltage from the inverter outlet, that should be 230V.

ii. Turn the inverter OFF.

iii. Turn off all your appliances

iv. Connect the inverter outlet to your house power mains.

V. Turn ON your inverter.

vi. Power your appliances, starting with least voltage consuming appliance.

Thanks bro for this educative piece, i think i share the same fate like the person that asked the first question.
I currently have a 1500VA Inverter, running on 2pcs 200AH batteries in series {24v}, with less grid power i have to still run my generator to charge my batteries which i no longer find funny...........
Please, whats the required Solar panel (Wattage) and Charge Controller rating do i need to effectivly charge my batteries.

Thanx

Here is what you need.

1. PWM Solar charge controller (24v, 30 amp)

2. 2 x 250 watts Poly-crystalline solar panels. Mono-crystalline solar panels would have been better though more expensive.
