This is the story of Annabel Beam who was only 9-years-old at the time. This story is based on real life events, real-life names and location..
To cut her long story short, ill be posting a few pictures from the scenes of the movie so that we can get a full picture of the story.


The Beam family is a happy christian family. On sundays they go to the presence of God where there is fullness of Joy to worship God and quicken their spirits.

At night, after bedtime stories, they share their heart desires. Below is little Anna and her mom.

One terrible night, The devil strikes. She starts to scream of pain and also vomit at the same time. Her parents rush her to the hospital while their neighbour (a church member) helps to stay with the remaining sisters.

She goes to Dr. Richard Dorsi referred to by Dr. Sponder, who takes her xray and sees no fault in it.
He proposes that she might be lactose intolerant and urges them to look on the bright side as it is easily treatable.

There have been often recurrences and on one night the recurrence escalates seriously.
A younger doctor insists that she is fine and might be suffering from a severe case of acid reflux and that she has raw throat. He prescribes some anti-nausea medicine. The mother insists angrily that that is not the case and asserts that she needs to know what exactly is wrong with her daughter.

An older doctor (Dr. Peter Burgi) takes it up and does a series of xrays and sonograms. He affirms to Anna's parents that Anna has 100% complete abdominal obstruction, and that part of her intestines are twisted off. He insists that it must be cleared right away or Anna's going to die.

During the operation, church members come to the hospital to offer support and prayers

After a successful operation, the obstructions were cleared. Dr. Peter Burgi tells the parents that Anna appears to have a severe intestinal motility disorder and that her body can't process food. This means that the intestines cease to function properly and what she eats and drinks tends to stay there.

The older doctor affirms that there is no cure and that she is restricted to tubal feeding till it ceases to work. He refers them to a specialist, Dr. Samuel Nurko. United States foremost motility expert. A pediatrician from Mexico who is based out of Boston. Christy, Anna's mum looks up to God after the heartbreaking news.

The child begins to ask serious questions. The mother concedes that there are so many things she does not know. She affirms that God loves her.

In a frantic effort to reach the specialist, she keeps calling the hospital and the attendant keeps telling her to wait. She impatiently calls Dr. Burgi (the older doctor who recently operated on Anna) and he tells her that she is on the waiting list and that she'll get a chance when one of his (Dr. Samuel Nurko) current patients no longer need his care i.e when they are dead.

The woman realises that she has to wait for someone to die and then pray that Anna does not go before then. She helplessly cries out to God.

After Church one sunday, some church members ask about the welfare of her daughter (Anna) and insist that she ought to have been healed. They propose that it could be the sins of Kevin (Anna's dad), Christy (Anna's mom) or even the sins of Anna that is preventing God from healing her.
Christy cant believe what she heard, she excuses herself immediately.

After service, the family is back at home. Christy is so mad that some church members could say such a thing. She yells at her husband in anger and threatens to go and address those people. Her husband tries to calm her down and asks her to let it go.

After what seems to be a divine intervention, Expert Doctor Samuel Nurko eventually sees Anna and does a motility test and an endoscopy for her. After the tests, he confirms that she is very ill and in a tremendous amount of pain.

He breaks the problem down for Anna's mother and says Anna is suffering from an intestinal motility disorder, a paralysis of the GI tract i.e the top part of the stomach works but the bottom part does not. He explains that the nerves dont fire correctly and so the intestines cant pick up the messages the neurons are sending. He says the pain is very complicated to treat.

He says that there is no cure for Anna's condition, but the treatments are focused on improving the quality of her life and improve the pain before she dies eventually. He continues that the Boston children centre is one of the few centres that has been granted permission by the FDA to prescribe a drug that can help Anna digest few foods. He says that if it's successful, then the distension in her stomach and the tubal feeding would be reduced. Indeed this would give her the semblance of a normal life including side effects such as headaches, diarrhoea, swelling and cardiac arrhythmia.

In what appears to be a financial struggle, Christy and Kevin deliberate on how to cope with $1000 to Boston children centre every six weeks, $2000 more a month to increase their yearly cap and in addition new medication, non covered procedures, out of network doctors. Christy argues that she does not know how they can afford it. Kevin tells her that it will be okay and that she should have faith. She yells in anger "I dont have faith about anything, I cant even pray".

The husband looks surprised at her remark and assures her that he would do whatever he has to do to support the bleak situation. He also informs the pastor of His wife's remarks and begins to sell his properties to support their financial situation.

The pastor invites Christy for a talk. He says he wished he could give everbody who comes to church a spiritual IQ test (in reference to what the church members told Christy earlier). She insists that shes done with church. The pastor asks her what he can do to help her come back to church. She replies "You can tell me why a loving God would let Anna suffer the way she has."

The pastor says he does not have an answer for that. He however states that "Just because she's sick doesnt mean theres not a loving God" He says he has tried it both ways at the lowest points of his life, and that one feels a lot better than the other.



Anna remained the hospital, and In her ward, she meets Haley, a new friend suffering from a bone disease.

The two sick girls converse for a while and Haley asks Anna why she wants the cross (necklace with a cross) with her. The nurse had earlier removed the necklace and hanged it on her drip. Anna replies Haley and says its a reminder that Jesus is with her. Haley asks Anna if she thinks Jesus is with her too, Anna replies "of course He is".
They share on their pains until Haley asks Anna if shes afraid to die. Anna replies "sometimes".

Haley's dad is a reporter and an atheist who has raised his daughter free from what atheists call "superstitions". He learns from Haley that Anna feels God is with her. He responds "If it makes her feel better".

Anna comes in with the nurse and extends a kind gesture to Haley by offering her the cross, Haley accepts it. Haley's dad asks Christy to step outside and tells her that he appreciates the relationship of the girls but he does not want anyone giving her false hope or filling her head with that kind of stuff. Christy apologises and assures him that Anna meant no harm.

In another scene, Anna cries in pain and tells her mom that she wants to die and go to heaven where there is no pain or suffering. Christy replies in tears that it would leave a hole in her heart.

Anna says she does not want to make anyone sad but the pain is unbearable and she wants it to be over. Christy pets her.


The family flies to boston to light up Anna's day

After a while, Doctor Nurko discharges Anna and advises Christy to spend all the time she has with her as she has a short time to live.

They climb high. The old tree branch cracks and the girls panic. While trying to move to safety, Anna falls into the hollow 3 storey tall tree head first.

With the help of the neighbours, help arrives.

Christy realizes that she may have lost her daughter. Helplessly, she advances towards the tree and called out to God while rescue efforts continued.

After about 5 hours, Anna is brought unconsciously out of the hollow tree and lowered down.

A rescue helicopter on standby flies her to the hospital immediately.

At the Hospital, Doctor Joe Hester addresses the parents and tells them that Anna has no broken bones, complete limb movement, no internal bleeding, no indication of bruising. The doctor says she regained consciousness as she fell skull first 30 feet and woke up with a smile on her face.
He says he's been a doctor for 25 years and has never seen anything like that.

After Anna is discharged, she lives her life and plays as though nothing ever happened to her.

Anna's bloated tummy goes back to normal, her mother can't believe it as she calls out to Anna's dad.

Anna tells her to calm down, that Jesus told her that she'd be fine when she returns to earth.

Anna explains to her parents that she went to heaven after she fell inside the hollow tree.

"Heaven was very bright and it was very peaceful," Annabel recalled. "There was no pain, and that's why I wanted to stay. And I sat on Jesus' lap and I asked Him if I could stay. "He said, 'No, Annabel, I have plans for you on Earth that you cannot complete in heaven, but whenever the firefighters get you out, there will be nothing wrong with you."

When asked what Jesus looked like, Annabel described him as having brown hair, a beard and he wore a purple sash.
Sure enough, when Annabel awoke, she was so healthy that the painkillers prescribed for possible discomfort were left entirely untouched as Annabel was perfectly fine.

Anna's parents tell themselves that its unbelievable and that no one would believe her. Little Anna replies and says "Its okay. They'll get there when they get there"




Christy goes back to Motility Expert Doctor Nurko who affirms that she's assymptomatic, and that both her stomach and intestines are now functioning properly. Christy demands a medical explanation. Dr Nurko says that her central nervous system has been regenerated, that its like she's had a software reset.

Dr Nurko refuses to use the term "miracle", he instead professionally calls it "spontaneous remission" to explain what cant be explained. Dr Nurko says he can't medically say shes cured as in reality, there is no cure for intestinal motility disorder.

In the hospital following her accident, Annabel's doctors ran MRI and CT scans and were amazed to see her skull and brain were intact and had not sustained any major injuries. Further tests revealed Annabel was cured.

Sure enough, when Annabel awoke, she was so healthy that the painkillers prescribed for possible discomfort were left entirely untouched as Annabel was perfectly fine.
Annabel's story was so amazing that her mother, Christy Beam, wrote a book to spread God's continued miracles.

This is a very touching true story, similar to the story of my mom. The Doctors who asked us to prepare for her death remain in U.C.H till date. As a Nigerian, I had no reason to take her pictures while she was in the hospital, but with my mouth, I can make known the faithfulness of God.
I hope to open a thread on her story soon. As for Anna Beam, her story is filled with tangible and substantial proof as well as names and medical reports. I hope it can minister unto the hearts of christians and unbelievers alike.
