About 5,000 pieces of second-hand panties, brassiere, other underwears and children’s clothings were part of items intercepted by officials of the Ogun State Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

Also seized were jeans trousers, assorted cars and trucks, cartons of sugar, soap, insecticides, bubble gum, frozen chicken vegetable oil and five sets of settee chairs.

Disclosing this in an interactive session with journalists, the Customs Area Comptroller (CAC), Ahmad Jamo, expressed shock that Nigerians could import such large quantity of under-wears, which he described as complete industrial production.

According to him, 202 bales of second-hand clothing materials were neatly concealed in a DAF Truck, while 5 sets of settee chairs were imported from China.

Jamo said the seizures, totalling 12, were recorded within the first three weeks of October and within forest areas. He gave the total Duty Paid Value (DPV) as N18,516,560.

The Customs boss hinted that his command had taken the enforcement drive into the forest, where they discovered that smugglers stockpile their goods at a point, and when the goods are enough for a truck load, they load them and head for their market places.

He said, “with this method, we are able to track the goods down in the forest, before they get to the road.” He posited that all the seizures were made around Ijoun in the Yewa-South area of the state.

The intercepted vehicles were a Volvo 940, Audi 80, Nissan Sunny, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Toyota Tercel.

Others were a DAF truck, Mitsubishi space wagon, Mazda 323, marked HU502AAA, Mazda 626, marked GV785EK^ and Iveco truck, marked XP751LND
