My Horrible Experience In Kano Nysc Camp Clinic by Fingerprinter(m): 6:12am On Dec 02, 2016 |
I had wanted to write this a long time ago, but I have been lazy, but after reading about the young girl that was left to die in kano nysc camp, I've decided to write my own experience in the camp clinic of the same kano nysc camp. I'm a 2016 batch A stream 2 Corp member. Few days to resumption of camp around June, I took some drugs to treat a minor illness and I got struck with serious stomach ulcer and excess stomach acid. This was happening on Thursday 9th June. I was confused as I have not had ulcer before. The next day being Friday, I went to the hospital, the doctor prescribed some drugs for me and asked me to leave. However, my symptoms worsened that I even started calling my friends telling them I won't be able to make it to camp. On Monday, 13th June, being the day camp resumed, I visited the hospital again. I was given another set of drugs. The next day being Tuesday, my symptoms had reduced a bit, and I set out on the longest travel I've ever made all my life. I was going to travel from enugu to kano. When I got to kano camp on Wednesday, it was already the last day for registration. I almost couldn't get kits. I was managing my symptoms till Monday 20th, when I started feeling very bad again. On 21st, I had to visit the camp clinic. I was expecting to meet experienced doctors there, but there were only fellow Corp members attending to others as doctors. I explained to them what was wrong with me. They said I should go get the drugs I have been taking. I went to my room and brought all the drugs. After accessing the drugs, they gave me an injection that morning and asked me to increase the dosage of one of the drugs. At night, I took the double dosage of the drug and the others and slept. I woke up around 12am the next day sweating profusely. I was also having serious headache, coupled with general body heat and i was loosing energy and coordination. Infact, after sometime, I started losing consciousness. I used my last energy to pick up my phone, and I started browsing the diseases that could have the possible symptoms I was feeling. I couldn't come up with anything meaningful. The next morning, when my room mates saw that I was not moving nor talking, they had rushed me back to the clinic to explain to them that they do not know what's happening to me. I overheard one of the doctors telling the other that I was telling lies, that I was just looking for a means to relocate. That morning, I took the drugs again and had the same reactions, that was when I took my phone and browsed the side effects of 'x' drug overdose. The search results came up with exactly the same feeling I was having and I stopped taking the double doses immediately. I would have died if I hadn't done something on my own to search the cause of my problems. This is also a call to nysc to atleast always make available one experienced doctor in their camp clinics to stop all these 'deliberate' killing of our young men and women. Thanks for reading this. You can also share your own experience(s). 1 Like |

Had the same experience in my time. A Medical Doctor from Unical(Corper Shun too) diagnosed me with malaria, when i actually nearly died from Typhoid. We did not have a qualified Medical Doctor in my Camp. 2 Likes |

It's not the fault of NYSC, it's the fault of corpers. A lot of corpers hide their sicknesses and go to camp only to find out that the secret drugs they use are not available in camp. During registration, Nysc required u to fill out a column for health challenges. 1 Like |

lofty900: How is it the fault of Corp members that nysc cannot provide at least one experienced doctor per camp for just a period of two to three weeks? In my own case, I came with my own drugs that was enough to take me through the period of camping. An inexperienced 'corper' Doctor asked me to double the dosage of one of the drugs since I wasn't getting better from taking the normal dose. In a bid to lessen my pains, I did as he said only to come down with serious side effects! |

Fingerprinter:sorry about ur case but I still think corpers are to blame. Any corper with health challenges should disclose it to officials. If there is no experienced doctor in camp they will arrange for the person to be taken to a specialist hospital. |

Fingerprinter:I'm currently serving and I remember vividly that our camp used an ambulance to convey corpers with serious health problems to the hospital. Camp doctors are only there to manage minor cases. |

This is an indictment on the medical training of Nigerian doctors. It shows that we are churning out a lot of quacks. |

lofty900: I think 2000plus lives shouldn't be entrusted only into the hands of corp doctors without at least three resident doctors. How hard can it be for the scheme to employ the services of qualified doctors, camp runs for just 3 weeks for crying out loud. I'm currently in the kano state orientation camp, believe me when i tell you that the nearest hospital is miles away. They should have swift emergency service. I still don't get why corpers should take all the blame. it's just too bad. Of course some do not disclose their health challenges and some pretend to have all sorts of health issues it still isn't an excuse for poor health facilities. How can a clinic without drugs and experienced doctors handle emergency cases? Its too bad. |
