Govt: Religious leaders must soundproof churches, mosques

Lagos State government has prohibited live band music at various beer parlours and restaurants. The government also told religious leaders to soundproof worship centres to minimise the effect of noise generated on the residents.

The General Manager, Lagos State Environment Protection Agency (LASEPA), Adebola Shabi (an engineer), who disclosed this to our correspondent, said the decision came on the heels of increasing rate of petitions by residents lamenting the disturbance from the beer parlour, club houses and religious houses. Shabi said Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was poised to develop Lagos. The LASEPA decried the rate at which residential areas were being converted to commercial use without government’s approval.

He also blamed the residents for not informing government when those structures were being converted. Shabi said some of the structures were located in places without the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) which would enable government plan for the area or possibly prevent the project from being developed in the area.

The GM also warned that beer parlours and restaurants which violated the directive would be penalised. He said: “Any complaint from the residents henceforth will attract sanction.

They must obtain permit to do so and failure to obtain permit, the fine is N500,000. We must discourage needless noise making at our residents. “In the 60s and 70s we had night life but you can see that Governor Ambode is working to bring back night life. Government is spending a lot in assisting the police.

“Let me also use this medium to inform the Baales and other community leaders and residents to inform the police and government on strange development in their areas. A lot of development takes place unknown to government because people in the area refuse to inform the government and this is why residential areas are converted to industrial areas. EIA is essential in any development and the community must be carried along in doing it.”

The LASEPA GM also condemned the practice of parking vehicles on the street for too long, saying residents must also report such in order not to jeopardise efforts to boost security. Government had in the past sealed many churches, mosques, hotels and other business outfits because of noise pollution.

I support the idea of closing churches & mosque that put their speaker out side their building.
For Christ sake I don't know why speaker should be out side while your church members use to stay inside the church.

Very good especially for those people that their houses are beside a CAC or MFM church, mosques with speakers outside and noise making bars.

Great news.

We must put an end to indiscriminate noise pollution by people who should know better.

Ambode abeg leave live band in the Bars alone. Nor be everyone get money to go Quilox.

Relaxing in the bar is the last hope of the common man after you lot in power would have oppressed their means of survival with harsh policies.

Please ban 'em. Especially those idiots that sells CD's with their speakers making stupids noise on very sunny hot noon. And those mosques that puts speakers out to make noise.

The bars and restaurants aren't the problem, it's the mosques and churches.

They disturb you at 6 in the morning and then they disturb you again in the evening.

A commendable development. Noise pollution has been seriously overlooked in this country forgetting its dangerous effects in the long run

Bad enough the roars of laughter, excitement and high "spiritedness" cause enough disturbance

I do not understand this one o. You are working hard to bring back night life like it was in the 70s, but you are banning live bands in bars and night clubs.
Secondly the recorded music and sound systems make as much noise if not more than the live bands. Why are those not banned?
As for sound proofing churches and turning down the noise levels generated in religious houses, I am all for it. In short it is long overdue.
