There has been a lot of talk about engine rebuilds on Cartalk, so I feel we should look at both sides of the fence critically.

Engine rebuilds, are basically replacing all worn out parts of an engine with new parts, making adjustments to certain parts of the engine.

Now I was in the warehouse yesterday to pickup a consignment that just arrived when I sighted a very sharp shiny looking 2zr-fe engine that would fit in most corrolas and matrix from 2007-2015, I am a sucker for new shiny engines, and I could not let this pass me by.

I entered the shop, negotiated the price and had it transported to the workshop even though I had no orders for it.

When it got to the shop, I had the intake and exhaust manifolds removed to get a clear view of this beauty.

So my question, what would you rather do in a situation like this? Replace with a little extra cost, or Rebuild?

Meanwhile it's not a fluke, there are engines in the market in much more prestine conditions than this, and deals like this come in almost every time if you have the patience to look, and the right amount to pay.

This was supplied Sept 2017, still waxing stron in abuja.

Engine replacement is better given our peculiar condition...in terms of cost and ease of access to rebuilding parts, relative to the cost of a replacement engine from a donor car.

Replace without blinking. Dont worry the engine will not last a week in your shop grin

right tools? . . . check

OEM spares? . . . check

capable and knowledgeable workmanship? . . . check

engine with no history of extreme neglect or abuse? . . . check

Then let’s rebuild wink

It feels good knowing that those your new pistons and rings are all coming out the workshop with zero mileage although in an old engine block. That’s a feeling of actually ‘knowing’ something is at least gonna work for a few decades without hassles until it gives

It’s like asking me what’s cost effective? Buying a new car or a used one?

Of course buying a used car will forever be more cost effective than a new one no matter the various seen and unforeseen ‘issues’ the used one may have

Well except if it’s an issue of rust . . . Don’t buy a car that’s carrying extreme rust. That’s something your car can’t come back from people

You really didn't leave us much to say here. Most of the time, the damaged parts are few and cheap and may come down to just gaskets, rods or a head that needs machining. We have all the boxes checked and will almost always rebuild rather than replace. It is nearly always cheaper and comes with a warranty (especially in this country with cheap labor). We gave an example in our little rant about rebuilding smiley https://www.nairaland.com/4501821/milex-carquest-2nd-largest-usa/18#69784777

When it's not better for the customer to rebuild, we recommend replacement.

Gazzuzz, would you confidently give a customer a 6 month to 1 year warranty on that beauty? I'm guessing no because you never really know the story behind that replacement. We have the machine to make any engine look prettier than that one in 45minutes and internally it's a piece of crap. It's the same machine used to clean up all the parts when we rebuild.

We do replace engines here too and there are many companies bringing in used engines from Japan especially.

Most of the times, the engines that I have replaced have been to get a better JDM or GDM engine that has more power.

Is replacing an engine cheaper and faster> Of course but the customer needs to be given a chance to make a decision.

What I see here is a "we only replace engine" mantra.

This is not good for customer service.

I agree but would argue about the cheaper part. Depends on the engine. e.g. Corolla, yes. Land cruiser, hell no. Plus, still no warranties. It works for a week and breaks, your problem.

True. That is where VIN checks come in handy.
Luckily some engines( particularly from the US) usually come with the VIN riveted to the engine body. This gives a fighting chance to know the history of the vehicle that had the engine in it( service history accident history etc).
Although due diligence is needed here o!( Our Ladipo brothers ehn!)

Personally, I will prefer to rebuild if I have the OEM parts, a capable machinist that will rebore cylinders and whatever needs to be machined.
The truth is a replaced engine is no match for a properly rebuilt engine. A rebuilt engine is practically new.
But again, this depend on location and available funds. Although desirable, rebuilding may not be feasible. If you are in Ebonyi (no offence. Most other states join sef) you are better off getting an engine replaced.

He agrees for him as the mechanic replacing is easier.. but no warranty! Man, we have stories of replacements that were hell because the engines had to go back two or three times and the seller (big used engine distributor too) didn't want to refund. 3 months to get money back o! In the meantime we had to deal with frustrated customer. At least there you can send engine back within a certain number of days under certain conditions. I think it was 10?

A good rebuild is better than used.

If somebody who just lost a powertrain is arguing that used is better, remind him he had a working used unit just days ago. If his vehicle was in an accident and the powertrain sold as working used, the new user would have ended up with a broken powertrain pretty soon.

Quality rebuild is only cheaper in select cases, where used ones are at bottom prices.

In transmissions for example, it's better to rebuild if you can find quality skill. Many transmissions are updated because of defective design or poor parts. Some are know to blow converters, crack drums, sheer off splines, vent poorly. There are regular updates to address these. There are Nissan CVTs that won't just go beyond 80k from factory. They need to be improved to get going.

If you buy used, how do you know if it has been updated? Used is faster, but anything can happen.
