On December 2, 2015, 14 people were killed and 22 others were seriously injured in a terrorist attack consisting of a mass shooting and an attempted bombing at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California. The perpetrators, Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, a married couple living in the city of Redlands, targeted a San Bernardino County Department of Public Health training event and Christmas party of about 80 employees in a rented banquet room.

The FBI retrieved an iPhone 5C from one of the terrorists who attacked . The phone was valuable, as it could potentially name any other possible associates linked with the attack.

The phone was, however, locked with a 4-digit-passcode, and set to erase all data after 10 failed attempts.

The FBI failed to hack it. They brought it to the NSA, who also failed to hack it.

They turned to Apple next. They made a request of Apple to essentially make a fake iOS that could disable the security features in order for the FBI to hack into it.

Apple’s response?

The United States government has demanded that Apple take an unprecedented step which threatens the security of our customers. We oppose this order, which has implications far beyond the legal case at hand. This moment calls for public discussion, and we want our customers and people around the country to understand what is at stake.

A gigantic NO.

Apple outright refused to help the FBI breach a terrorist’s iPhone because it valued the user’s privacy over national security.

I’ll let you guys decide for yourself how much Apple values data privacy.
