A civil rights activist, Nelson Ekujumi, on Tuesday described pan- Yoruba socio political organisation, Afenifere, as a mini-opposition party which has refused to see any good in the All Progressives Congress (APC) –led Muhammadu Buhari administration.

Shortly after the 14 days extension of the lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and FCT by the President, Afenifere, in a statement by Yinka Odumakin, its National Publicity Secretary, had described as unacceptable the decision by the federal government to give palliatives to 3.8m households out of 80 million poor Nigerians.

But speaking in a chat with INDEPENDENT, Ekujumi who is the Chairman of Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate (CPPM) said Afenifere is still bitter over the electoral loss suffered by Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 general elections.

“What has this government done that the group Afenifere commended it for? Absolutely nothing! Afenifere is more or less a mini-opposition party in sync with its mother party and candidate who lost the last Presidential election, so one can understand their bitterness and anger with everything ever since that electoral defeat”.

He also challenged Afenifere to come out with its own blueprint on how better to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic rather than attacking the policies of the government.


“Please, let the political party called Afenifere either on its own or with its parent political party, give us their own alternative rather than attacking every policy of this government that was overwhelmingly elected by the Nigerian people at the polls in 2019” he said.

As much as I love and cherish the much needed Afenifere , it's sad how they've turned that revered organization into an Anti Tinubu medium .
The only thing they now do well is attack Tinubu's interests . How sad ??

At least there have been good effort at infrastructural development e.g lagos/ibadan railway which is a good thing. Has afenifere at any time commended such effort despite that it is been done in the region they claim to be representing...
