Desert Flower by Waris Dirie
Waris Dirie ran away from her oppressive life in the African desert when she was barely in her teens, illiterate and impoverished, with nothing to her name but a tattered shawl. She traveled alone across the dangerous Somali desert to Mogadishu — the first leg of a remarkable journey that would take her to London, where she worked as a house servant; then to nearly every corner of the globe as an internationally renowned fashion model; and ultimately to New York City, where she became a human rights ambassador for the U.N. Desert Flower is her extraordinary story.

Holding Talks by Ola Rotimi
An Absurdist Drama.
When the play begins, we see the apprentice going through pages of tattered newspapers and idly reading out some of the captions in the pages, and the barber lies on the bench at the other side of the shop, sleeping in snatches. When the man enters, obviously a customer, we are told that he is a fat man. He is also a man of arrogance, for he surveys the room, letting his eyes sweep slowly across its entirety, taking everything in. (page 1)
The apprentice attends to him first and even wakes up the barber from his supposed slumber. The man asserts his arrogance on the barber and wins because the barber’s total indifference and complacency unnerves the man.

Every Day is for the Thief by Teju Cole
A young Nigerian writer living in New York City returns to Lagos in search of a subject-and himself.
Visiting Lagos after many years away, Teju Cole’s unnamed narrator rediscovers his hometown as both a foreigner and a local. A young writer uncertain of what he wants to say, the man moves through tableaus of life in one of the most dynamic cities in the world: he hears the muezzin’s call to prayer in the early morning light, and listens to John Coltrane during the late afternoon heat. He witnesses teenagers diligently perpetrating e-mail frauds from internet cafes, longs after a woman reading Michael Ondaatje on a public bus, and visits the impoverished National Museum. Along the way, he reconnects with old school friends and his family, who force him to ask himself profound questions of personal and national history. Over long, wandering days, the narrator compares present-day Lagos to the Lagos of his memory, and in doing so reveals changes that have taken place in himself.

What is Not Yours is Not Yours by Helen Oyeyemi
The key to a house, the key to a heart, the key to a secret—Oyeyemi’s keys not only unlock elements of her characters’ lives, they promise further labyrinths on the other side. In “Books and Roses” one special key opens a library, a garden, and clues to at least two lovers’ fates. In “Is Your Blood as Red as This?” an unlikely key opens the heart of a student at a puppeteering school. “‘Sorry’ Doesn’t Sweeten Her Tea” involves a “house of locks,” where doors can be closed only with a key—with surprising, unobservable developments. And in “If a Book Is Locked There’s Probably a Good Reason for That Don’t You Think,” a key keeps a mystical diary locked (for good reason). Oyeyemi’s tales span multiple times and landscapes as they tease boundaries between coexisting realities. Is a key a gate, a gift, or an invitation?

Time Will Tell by Yemi Elegunde
In September 1973, Yemi was just seven years old when he and his younger sister were taken away from England by their dad without their mum’s knowledge or consent. They lived and grew up in Nigeria for over fourteen years, where the only communication they had with their mum was by letters.
Without social media, computers or mobile phones, how does a mother track down her missing children? How do the children adapt to the sudden change of lifestyle?
This is the story of the events through the eyes of that seven-year-old child, from the moment he realised he was in a different country. Yemi relates the stark change of culture, the new family and the voyage of self-discovery. The book covers his roller-coaster young life of apprehensions and ecstasy, his rebellions, and his loves. It follows his anger as he grew from boy to teenager and his eventual reconciliation with himself and his parents.
What kind of man would that boy grow up to be? Time Will Tell.

Nwelezelanga: The Star Child by Unathi Magubeni
With a rich vocabulary that is poetic and uncluttered, this debut novel is nothing short of a masterpiece. It is both a well-written and philosophical book. The story begins with Nokwakha giving birth at her village home, and when it is discovered that the child is an albino the midwife convinces her that it is a curse and she should snuff the life out of it before it takes another breath. The dreadful deed is done by the river, but the ‘all-knowing one’ has other plans … With an assured voice and eloquent prose, Magubeni invites us into the life of this extraordinary being, Nwelezelanga, the child who should not have been, contrasting the themes of darkness and light, embracing the unknown and unseen in a way no one else has – or can.

Slave: My True Story by Mende Nazer
Mende Nazer lost her childhood at age twelve, when she was sold into slavery. It all began one horrific night in 1993, when Arab raiders swept through her Nuba village, murdering the adults and rounding up thirty-one children, including Mende.
Mende was sold to a wealthy Arab family who lived in Sudan’s capital city, Khartoum. So began her dark years of enslavement. Her Arab owners called her “Yebit,” or “black slave.” She called them “master.” She was subjected to appalling physical, sexual, and mental abuse. She slept in a shed and ate the family leftovers like a dog. She had no rights, no freedom, and no life of her own.
Normally, Mende’s story never would have come to light. But seven years after she was seized and sold into slavery, she was sent to work for another master—a diplomat working in the United Kingdom. In London, she managed to make contact with other Sudanese, who took pity on her. In September 2000, she made a dramatic break for freedom.
Slave is a story almost beyond belief. It depicts the strength and dignity of the Nuba tribe. It recounts the savage way in which the Nuba and their ancient culture are being destroyed by a secret modern-day trade in slaves. Most of all, it is a remarkable testimony to one young woman’s unbreakable spirit and tremendous courage.

Africa Must Unite by Kwame Nkrumah
This book, by a great PanAfricanist leader, sets out the case for the total liberation and unification of Africa. It is essential reading for all interested in world socio-economic developmental processes. Those who might have considered in 1963, when Africa Must Unite was first published, that Kwame Nkrumah was pursuing a ‘policy of the impossible’, can now no longer doubt his statesmanship. Increasing turmoil through the succession of reactionary military coups and the outbreak of needless civil wars in Afirca prove conclusively that only unification can provide a realistic solution for Africa’s political and economic problems. In the words of the author, “To suggest that the time is not yet ripe for considering a political union of Africa is to evade facts and ignore realities in Africa today. Here is a challenge which destiny has thrown . to the leaders of Africa.”

Young Fraudsters in Nigeria (Yahoo or G Boys) by Uzochukwu Mike P
There is no amount of packing that will make evil to be good. Also, there is no numbers of nicknames that will change criminal activities to what is good. Even if a pig is dressed up and kept in a fine room, that does not make it to stop being a pig. A pig is a pig irrespective of anything.
In the same line, an internet fraudster is a criminal irrespective of the paintings given to the person. They may be called smart guys in the society but that does not prevent them from not being criminals. A situation whereby someone hacks into people’s credit and debit cards and steal the money in the victims account is that person not a criminal? That is one of the ways G Boys make their money.
Their own criminal activities are carried out using computers and mobile phones. They dress neatly but all come from the money they stole from their victims. They wear expensive clothes, watches, shoes, necklaces but it does not change the fact that they are coded criminals.

Roses and Bullets by Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo
Roses and Bullets is a tale of young lovers caught up in the vortex of war; it is also a story of a nation reeling in the bangs and pains of ethnic irredentism and primordial sentiment; it refracts a real situation, where a nation’s future and hope (roses) were brought down by incendiary bullets of hate and disunity; and it deals with a nation’s saga in which its fallen roses (children, the brightest and most talented) inexorably stare the people in the face as well as engraft moral scare on the conscience of this nation. The ‘roses’ symbolise the generation to come as well as future of the nation, while bullets imagise war and fierce battle. Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo’s thematic preoccupation in this long novel is to paint picturesquely the futility of Nigeria-Biafra war (1967-1970), which killed millions of Nigerian people, and children as well as its attendant upshot in Nigeria’s nation-building project and the costly price two innocent lovers paid for this human error.

Double Yoke by Buchi Emecheta
Set on the campus of a Nigerian university, Double Yoke tells the story of two undergraduates who must confront the conflicting demands of tradition and modernity. While Nko pursues an education despite the resistance of those who feel a woman’s identity is assumed in traditional marriage, Ete Kamba’s love for her is severely tested as he is himself locked into the rigid attitudes from which Nko is attempting to break free. Nko must further contend with unscrupulous professors who would take advantage of her tenuous role as a woman in a male-dominated environment. As the author candidly portrays the status of women in emerging African nations, the choices facing Ete Kamba and Nko are neither clearcut nor perfect. In Double Yoke, Buchi Emecheta faces them head on.
