War of words rages as CNN releases second report indiciting FG, Army on Lekki shootings (Video)
CNN has released a second report regarding the #EndSARS shootings which happened at the Lekki Toll Gate, despite the threats of sanction from the Federal Government.
1st News had reported the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, slammed CNN for its initial investigative report, tagging it “poor journalism” while calling for sanctions on the network.

Mohammed also followed up the threat with a letter addressed to the management of CNN in Atlanta.

However, CNN on Tuesday did a second report with more damning footage; showing soldiers shooting at unarmed protesters on October 20, 2020.

The fresh report also shows the Commander, 81 Division, Brig. Gen Ahmed Taiwo; admitting before the judicial panel in Lagos that his men indeed took live ammunition to the toll gate.

The CNN report also highlights the fact that Brig. Gen Taiwo’s claim is at variance with the minister’s who had claimed last week that the army fired only blank bullets into the air.

Furthermore, protesters were depicted running as soldiers opened fire at the toll gate.

The National Broadcasting Commission, which is overseen by the Information Minister; had last month slammed hefty fines on three Nigerian television stations; for daring to use some of the footage which CNN has also used.

The Federal Government has been receiving flak from members of the United Kingdom Parliament and Amnesty International over the killing of protesters.


Meanwhile, former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is set to be named the new Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

1st News gathered the chances of Okonjo-Iweala brightened after South Korea reportedly decided to withdraw its Trade Minister, Yoo Myung-hee from the race.

Accordingly, Seoul is expected to announce this decision in the coming weeks; thereby facilitating the appointment of Okonjo-Iweala, based on sources close to the situation.

Korea has already conveyed its decision to the United States; which had been insisting on the selection of Yoo. Part of the reason she was selected by Washington against Okonjo-Iweala is that she is close to the Democratic Party.

Washington refused to accept the recommendation made by the selection panel; chaired by General Council Chair Ambassador David Walker that Okonjo-Iweala is the candidate most likely of the two to attract consensus; because she clearly carried the largest support by the members in the final round.
