Why We Sacked 2,414 Teachers Employed By Ex-gov Ahmed –kwara Govt by Le124(m): 8:47am On Dec 26, 2020
Tunde Oyekola, Ilorin

Kwara State government has explained why it disengaged 2,414 teachers from the service of the State Universal Basic Education Board.

The teachers’ disengagement was announced in a statement titled, ‘Kwara govt takes stand on 2019 SUBEB workers, offsets pending seven months’ salaries. New employment portal opens January.’

The statement was signed by the Press Secretary, state Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Mr Yakub Ali-Agan.

The statement indicted that the sacked teachers were recruited in the twilight of the administration of former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.

The teachers were employed to teach English, Mathematics, and science subjects in junior secondary schools in the state.

However, the state government said although it had earlier screened the teachers and cleared 1,658 of them, it was later discovered that the majority of them were not qualified to teach.

The statement read, “For instance, it was discovered that some of the 1,658 [teachers] purportedly adjudged to be qualified did not, in fact they don’t have the required teaching certificates.

It was discovered that the teachers were engaged for subjects not covered in the executive approval, underscoring the unwholesome and impeachable nature of the entire process.

“Following from the above, the government has decided to start the employment process all over again in January 2021. The government will open a new application portal for all the 2,414 and any other eligible persons to apply for SUBEB teaching jobs in relevant subjects to be advertised. This effectively nullifies the controversial employment process of 2018/2019

The statement further explained that the decision to sack the teachers was built on justice and fairness to everyone, particularly taxpayers, and children, whose future depended on the quality of teaching they received at the elementary schools.

Meanwhile, the state governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, has directed the immediate payment of seven months’ salaries earlier withheld from 594 SUBEB teachers since June 2020.

“The salaries were paid on Thursday night on compassionate grounds as their employment status remains unofficial,” a government statement said on Thursday.

The Nigerian education system should be scrapped......it's not fit for purpose

Let students log into 'zoom' lectures abroad!

After reading the article, I now see that the reasons he stated for sacking them aren't bad.

Bad teachers would make bad students. And bad students would further make Nigeria a degenerated society.

If you don't suffer, you can't have sense...

And if you still do not want to have sense, then you suffer more and continue to suffer... Nigerians are not ready to have sense! Their choice of leaders has said it all!

Damn! He's constantly being vilified for the no-recruitment show in his administration.
Now, he's sacked 2,414 teachers just to employ the same number.
Lol! Mission success. His administration has now finally opened a job porter.

Foolish politicians!

Same way another party/govt would find excuses to give when it's time to sack your own people, too.

I was at NIN Enrollment Centre in one local govt in Ibadan. We were all stranded as the engineer was busy repairing their aged generator. Many of the people who were there claimed that the previous govt left with every good property in the LG.

Politicians,,,,, bunch of selfish people!

if truly the decision is not political motivated the decision is the best in the last quarter of the year in the State. Anything that as to do with education must be handle by qualified people

It's simple.

Because they misspelt government as "governmet".

Wouldn't want such Nairaland teacher teaching a child nonsense.

This is the major problem with state civil service system in Nigeria. One government will employ, the other will sack. A cycle of employ and sack continues in state civil service.

Why not give them time to upgrade?
It's not easy staying unemployed this period na.

To imagine Saraki and his team mates were outstaged because of this man.

Even Saraki can't do this. Now we know Saraki even better pass all these people.

Who in their right senses would want to work with a State government? One idiiot would just come onboard and disengage you and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it.
I resisted every attempt to work in the Kwara State civil service. I turned all offers down, citing low pay, but deep down, I knew this is the reason.

The entire 2414 of them can't be unqualified, haba.

Everyone knows the disengaged teachers were just unfortunate to be caught in the politics of bitterness.
Same thing Ibikunle Amosun did in Ogun State in 2011

U
I'm a kwaran and also once NPOWER volunteer,
My observations in most secondary schools are as follows.
1- Too many female staffs ( 42 females 3 males). Students don't fear most female teachers like male.
2- No discipline or proper punishment. Students come to school anytime and leave when they like most especially schools without fence... You still see students walking magesticaly on the road 9 am.
3- Old teachers. Most of the teachers are old both ages and teaching methodology wise.
4- Very poor standard of evaluation. Hardly do schools repeat failed students, rather they patch them and promote them. Students are not serious cos they know that if they fail Junior weac there is room for resit. All they need is 4 pass in any subject and math, English. If they fail math and English they will pay 1500 for resit which is automatic pass.
5- Public schools needs more security and disciplinary guard ( imagine students beating up teacher ) and nothing will happen.
6- Principals are not incharge ( most principals are scared of both teachers and some students cos most teachers are politicians wives or side babes, same applicable to some students, some secondary School students now f,ck big men's. The principal have to play along cos she doesn't want to lose her/his job or being transferred to village.

Tired of type cos I'm using a small phone.
On my final note, something need to be done on Nigeria education most especially SECONDARY SCHOOL very fast. Peace
