It's no secret that most conservative social media accounts are being targeted for suspension or outright ban based on claims they enabled falsehood and hatred.
There is deafening silence from the vocal oppositions to nigerian social media bill given America's censorship of her social media and their eagerness to "report" Nigeria to America.

The hipocracy of it all is that America would have been in the forefront of condemning such censorship if it was done by another country. 3 things come to play here-

1. Americans have handed regulation of the social media to the tech companies them selves. Self regulation is a recipe for disaster anywhere.

2. No where is social media regulation more needed than here in Nigeria especially for censorship and penalizing deliberate peddling of falsehood as we saw in the END SARS campaign and its destructive aftermath to the Lagos economy

3. We must learn from the above by creatively enacting regulations that not allow self regulation by the tech giants and also has enough checks and balances to avoid abuse by any government

APC will use the purge in America as a reference. They sure know how to do it. Those who are masturbating that they banned trump from all the social media shouldn't cry foul when the Nigerian government will use this as a reference to ban on social media in nigeria

Only a fool with a death wish believes social media shouldn't be regulated.

Hence my 3rd point. We cant just sit by and do nothing. We have seen the role false media played in the Rwandan genocide, we have also seen what a laissez faire approach to regulation can produce with the 2008 global financial crisis which brought the world to her knee financially. Are willing to wait for a catastrophe brought about by selfish self regulation of social media or the lack of it?

Social media is being abused in Nigeria under the guise of freedom of speech, to spread falsehood in order to incite hatred and division among various ppl - it is the responsibility of any government and her legislators with the interest of this country at heart to regulate it; the social media bill is therefore very much in order and well overdue.
