Oil marketers have said they are ready to resume importation of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) if foreign exchange is made available to them at a competitive rate

The Chairman, Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mr Adetunji Oyebanji, while speaking at a virtual press briefing on Thursday, said the country should move beyond the debate on the arguments for the removal of petrol price subsidies.

“The discussion we should be having today is how best to maximise the benefits of the removal of price controls and subsidies while minimising the adverse effects of this action on our citizens,” he said.

He said as promised by the government, a visible and measured reduction in the cost of governance throughout the polity would bring about savings that can be directed toward improving the livelihood of the average Nigerian.

“This cost optimisation initiative would demonstrate to Nigerians the good faith of the decision-makers in both the public and private sectors.”

Oyebanji stressed the need for domestic refining, saying, “It is necessary that we as a country have some clarity as to when optimal internal refining capacity will return to Nigeria.”

He said, “We need to collectively and as a nation, track the progress of work at all the new refineries under construction across the country to ensure they are delivered timely, efficiently and sustainably.

“If need be, private investment should be brought in to facilitate the rehabilitation and upgrade of the NNPC refineries for the efficient growth of Nigeria’s internal refining capacity and to ensure energy sufficiency for the country.”

1.I doubt government is going to give fuel marketers the dollars to use 'at a favourale rate'. (Anyone that should be getting dollars at a favourable rate should be manufactuerrs only)

2.At the end of the day, the only way for the marketers to get enough naira to fund their search for dolalrs to import...should government allow them to import again would be by removign subsidy, and allowing them to set the price of fuel...not government.

3.When they have earned enough cash, they should consider building a refinery for us, to add to the several being built on ground. Them can't import forever.

4.The last time Nigeria allowed marketers to import fuel..those were the days of sfake subsduy claims, and mass smuggling arising from the fact that rising oil prices made it dififcult for government to keep on sustaining subsidies comfortably (which led to the phenonemom of many private makreters outside Lagos and Abuja and some of the big cities charging much higher than the official price...and chronic fuel scarcity).

There is a reason why fuel prices keep on going up..and recall that GEJ would have ended all that mess as far back as 2012...if the pepople of Nigeria had given up their addiiction to cheap fuel...which by the way isn't really cheap.

Imagine the whole president of this country been the minister of petroleum resources and yet there is nothing progressive about that ministry, isn't that alone a shame?

If he wanted to be progressive, he would have removed subsides on fuel.

Buit that means fuel at N300 per liter...does not win votes.

The government is tactically taking back the minimum wage paid to workers. It's a failed state we find ourselves. Even the emerging Dangote refinery won't reduce fuel cost to the bearest minimum because his focus is on exporting to other countries. There's nothing about Dangote that has favored Nigerians. The cement sector is a typical example.
