As a Yoruba boy who lived in the Niger Delta for 14 years, one thing that will strike you is the abject poverty across the six states. It is hard to believe since 1956 when oil was first found in Oloibiri,Bayelsa close to a thrillion dollars has been pumped from the ground with nothing to show for it. There is no discounting that massive corruption by former military administrators, local government chairmen,Governors,NDDC and Ministry of Niger Delta also had a major role to play in the poverty in the region.

However, when you go to Abuja and Lagos you see how some of the Niger Delta wealth used to breast feed the nation is been spent. The brewing of unrest in the Niger Delta during the OBJ and Yaradua regime can be traced to the One Million March organized to extend Abacha rule, that had men and women brought in from across the six states in the Niger Delta to Abuja and they saw how the money from their backyard was being spent extravagantly by people that had never seen oil or faced the consequences environmental degradation.

The Niger Delta has long been cheated,even the current Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) is from the northern part of the country. And to exerbate things further the recent PIB bill they had little input into is looking to shortchange them further and institutionalize this injustice through provision of between 2%-5% for oil producing communities and 30% fund for explorations of northern basins.

What the 30% provision for exploration of oil in the northern basins in the current Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) means is that billions of dollars of Niger Delta funds will be spent and used to empower the North through overheads such as : royalties,catering for staff,northern contractors and their sub contractors,local and state taxes. Given the opaque nature in which the NNPC is operated there will also be billions of dollars of Niger Delta funds lost through corruption and diverted to buy properties locally and internationally as well as buy luxury vehicles.
