What's With Nigerian Elders And Receiving Items With Left Hand? by ALABACONNECT(m): 7:37pm On Jul 29, 2021 |
I created this trend out of curiosity. I have always noticed the whole drama that comes with someone giving another person an item using his/her left hand but I didn't want to draw much attention to it until today. Got back from work today and I met my aunt(we stay in the same compound) with a "house to house" tailor who she gave some wears to amend. After he finished, she gave him 500 naira and he gave her 300 naira change using his left hand. I saw her flair up instantly insisting that he give her with the other hand. "Omo lo omo"(forgive my Yoruba) Hausa man that didn't get the whole drama was just smiling innocently through the whole thing. Took him like 5 minutes to get the drama after which he changed to his right hand and gave her the money. Question is, what's the 411 with "giving items with left hand"?

It's regarded as a sign of disrespect. It's an African thin though.( Nigeria especially). The whites don't count all these. 1 Like |

That's Nigerian mentality for you. Some would 'respectfully' receive with left what you gave them with left. That's if they aren't in the mood to talk or argue. (Conductor passenger exchange). Funny enough, I have severally reprimanding my 8 year old niece over this behaviour as well. Omo Naija na cruise abeg. Enjoy the vibes. 1 Like |

Mostly from frustrated and poor ones. If u check well. I hate taking 1000 naira note to nuysomething of 100 naira or 500 naira to buy something of 50 naira . U will wish u don't have money because the person will insult u taya, and not like he or she doesn't have your balance o. But the bitter ones would start lamenting that you want to take their change,as if them dey chop and dry legal tender with egg and cold pepsi |
