The Ovahimba community occupy the northern region of Namibia which is semi arid.They are Bantub speakers whose culture has not been much eroded by Western influence.
Living in arid area,the Himba practice nomadic pastoralism keeping animal such as cows and long-tailed sheep.The wealth of a man is measured by the number of cattle he owns.
Himba girls have no much say in the choice of husbanda they marry. Once a girl reaches puberty,she is considered ripe for marriage and it is therefore the work of his father to look for a suitor.The father's choice is always considered final.Boys are allowed to marry after undergoing circumcision.
This wonderful tribe occupy an arid area which means that access to water is such a hurdle.In regards to this,they have come up with their own way of remaining fresh without use of water.The Himba occasionally burns some specific herbs which they later allow the steam to heat the people.This steam is believed to clean them and offer protection over sun rays.Their women apply red ochre on their bodies which is considered a beautiful ornament.
It is an African courtesy to welcomr visitors and entertain them.However,the Himba have a unique way of treating visitors.On the night of visiting,the husband sleeps in another hut away from his matrimonial one where the visitor shall be with the man's wives.The visitor is free to be intimate with the wives as a way of good treatment.Infact,if there is no other hut,the man will be forced to sleep outside.
