Strike continues as ASUU NEC fails to suspend action
…Says strike is not only option to resolve disputes

The Congress of University Academics, CONUA, has called on the Federal Government to, without further delay, register and recognise it as an academic staff union in the university system in Nigeria.

This, the union said, had become necessary as it had met all conditions required for it to be so registered.

The National Coordinator, Dr Niyi Sunmonu, who stated this in a chat with Vanguard yesterday, opined that there was no condition yet to be fulfilled by the union for it to be registered.

He said: “Some days ago, the Minister of State for Labour, Mr Festus Keyamo, SAN, said publicly that CONUA has met all requirements for it to be registered as a trade union, but we don’t know what is still delaying that.

‘’There is always the need to look at issues from more than one perspective. Moreover, we operate in an academic environment.

“Look at it this way, when the GSM revolution started in the country, the pioneers said per second billing was impossible but another operator came and started per second billing, every other operator joined and the society has become better for it. We all know that there is freedom of association in the country as enshrined in the constitution.

“In the university, when someone is defending his final project, he faces an audience who would look at his work in different perspectives. That is intended to make things better.

‘’We don’t want to believe that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, is behind this reluctance on the part of the government,” he stated.

Sunmonu also denied insinuations that the government wanted to use his group to destabilise ASUU.

He said: “We were members of ASUU before some issues came up in 2016 at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, and when justice was not done and majority of members felt it was a deviation from what a union should stand for, CONUA eventually came up in 2018.”

FG please register them and ask all lecturers willing to teach to port from ASUU and register with CONUA, resume lectures and start collecting salary.

If they are insufficient in number, float job vacancies and absorb new lecturers, many unemployed MSc holders.

This should be done as soon as possible. ASUU are terrorists holding kids to ransom. Final year students have been in final year for two years now.

Proscribe ASUU or sabotage them from within. This is the plan of the govt. Meanwhile, CONUA should remember that the cane they used to flogged ASUU will also be used for them.Ndi ala.

Just imagine if ASUU and CONUA should go on strike the same time shocked
Most lecturers are forced to join ASUU after employment and they are tired of this strike, were only a few top members are benefitting and junior members are waiting for 6 months salary

Best bet for the suffering students.

But, National Coordinator, Dr Niyi Sunmonu, why do you want the devil to use you? Are you sure you will not be unfortunate in life? Are you sue that you wont die of leprosy for allowing yourself to be used by the wicked government to divide the university lecturers? Time will tell.

The direct implication of no work no pay policy in the present circumstance is that 2021/2022 session stands cancelled or at least a semester and whenever the University resumes, they are resuming on a clean slate of the 2022/23 session or the second semester of the last session afresh for the following reasons:

Spilled-over students whose results are yet to get approval from Senate would not be attended to because these are academic works in arrears of (the 2021/2022 session) that government does not want to pay for.

Final year students who have written exams or are yet to write will remain on campus because their scripts will not be marked and the outstanding semester exams will not be conducted. These are academic works in arrears (2021/2022) that government does not want to pay for.

For other levels (1 to 3 or to 5 & 6 as the case may be), each student should be ready for an extra one year. If exams have been conducted for the second semester, then those students have one semester more. But if the results of the first semester have not been released, then one extra year. This is because no academic work in arrears would be attended to because the government does not want to pay for the conclusion of that academic year.

The rules of engagement of University lecturers baring some exceptional variation based on tripartite legs of; Teaching 15 – 40%, Research 40%, and Community services 20%.
So when lecturers go on strikes, it’s mainly the teaching/conduct or grading of examinations aspect that is affected, in fact, we have some academics that do not teach at all or do not have course/students to teach in some semesters.

The Minister does not seems to understand the operations of the University’s academic calendar system, rules of engagement of academics globally as well as the ILO’s concept of social justice as it affects Industrial dispute resolution.
