I saw this on Twitter and there are many opposing views. As the subject reads, can you solve it?

36 is the answer. - Parentheses first - Exponents (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.) - MD: Multiplication and Division (left-to-right) - AS: Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right) The key to Multiplcation/Division is left to right. Same for addition and subtraction. Let's break it down: 60÷5(7-4) 60÷5(3) 60÷5 * 3 12 * 3 36 1 Like |

Re: Can You Solve This Mathematics? (photo) by adioolayi(m): 7:39am On Dec 11, 2023 |
ibnquasale: If you are solving (7-4) first, because of whatever you believed in...you will solve 5(3) afterwards, because 3 is still in that bracket (3) ..you are yet to remove the bracket. You can't just turn the bracket into multiplication without solving it. |

This early morning, some people are confused with simple BODMAS. If proper Sunshine hits by 12noon, that means their brain fit explodee. ibnquasale, I'm referring to you. I wonder where you saw exponents in the maths. |

Re: Can You Solve This Mathematics? (photo) by Ademola47(m): 9:00pm On Dec 11, 2023 |
ibnquasale: Using BODMAS, I think the correct answer should be 4 because the 5 should be used to multiply what is the bracket first. |
Re: Can You Solve This Mathematics? (photo) by ChybuzzDD(m): 3:41pm On Dec 12, 2023 |
numtums: Clearing that bracket involves multiplying out 5 and 3 before proceeding with the rest of the BODMAS rules. You can't end it half way at or as 5x3. |
Re: Can You Solve This Mathematics? (photo) by equity1(m): 8:52pm On Dec 12, 2023 |
Ensa777:when you minus 7 from 4 you are done with brackets the equation will look like this 60÷5×3 Using the same bodmas, division should go first before multiplication .60÷5 = 15×3=36. Bodmas is used to program calculator. If u use calculator, you will still get same answer.36 |

Re: Can You Solve This Mathematics? (photo) by ibnquasale(m): 8:25am On Dec 13, 2023 |
Ademola47: BODMAS and PEMDAS are both doing same thing. The Mathematical issue here is how to handle implicit multiplications or what others called multiplication by juxtaposition. Some school of thought feels that implicit multiplication should be giving preference over division, such would get 4, and other feels division and multiplication have same level of preference. The expression “60 ÷ 5(7 - 4)” is a perfect example of this ambiguity. Without clear parentheses dictating the operations, some might interpret it as , leading to the answer 4. Others might interpret it as , leading to the answer 36. To avoid confusion, it’s always better to add parentheses to clearly communicate the intended operations. |
