KWASU VC Tussle: State Of The University/ University Of The State by MejDadi: 11:45pm On Jan 10
Long reading!!!

The departed Kwara State University VC, late, Prof. Muhammed Mustapha Akanbi (SAN) may God have mercy on his soul, who- while alive- was blessed with intelligence, integrity, simple life style and many other features with which God singled him out among his mates. The fear of who can build on the solid foundation laid by the pioneer VC, an Emirate born Prof. AbdurRasheed Na’allah and multiply the achievements he had made was laid-off with the appointment of another Emirate born Prof M.M. Akanbi as second substantive VC of KWASU.

One of the achievements of Prof. M.M. Akanbi which shows the insightfulness of this great icon of humility is his appointment of Prof. S.L. Jimoh as one of his two deputies. While the ailment that held the VC away from the University for long time lasted, the deputy VC (academics)(now Ag. VC) with his unflinching loyalty to his boss did not only strive to keep the system moving without hitch but also protected the office of the boss from being overthrown by some die-hearted Ilorin Emirate-born professors who were yearning for the same seat.

Prof M.M. Akanbi, on assumption of office, made changes to some practices inherited from his Predecessor-Prof Na’allah. Shifting from College/Provost to Faculty/Dean, 4.0 CGPA to 5.0 CGPA and making administrative offices tenure-based appointment were launched. The introduction of tenure-based administrative appointments gave many staff hope which make them continuously salivating for appointments to positions like HOD, Director, Dean among others.

However, the principle of tenure-based appointment does not in any way quench the thirst of non-Emirate staff as the key offices are being rotated among the Emirate born staff. An Ilorin born professor for example, who was HOD of his department and Director of Remedial and Basic Studies program for many years was made the Dean of School of Postgraduate Studies till his retirement last month (December, 2023); the Provost of College of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences was retained as the Dean of Arts. Directors of Academic Planning, Distance and E-Learning, Information and Innovative Technology Resource (CIITR), Institute of Professional and Continuous Education, Centre for Basic and Advanced Studies and Works are no other than Emirate born staff.

With recent appointments by the Ag. VC, the Emirate born Director of Academic Planning after holding the office for more than seven (7) years was made to replace his brother - Dean Students’ Affairs who was also substituted for another Emirate scholar as Dean School of Post Graduate Studies. The Dean of Arts, after spending five (5) good years in the office, insisted to step out and fortunately his brother from the Emirate succeeded him. Director of Institute of Professional and Continuous Education who has been in office for eight (cool years is now Director of Centre for Technical, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training; the Director Centre for Basic and Advanced Studies after ten (10) years is now Director of KWASU-CAILS program.
Surprisingly, what the Emirate people and sympathizers have being seriously echoing and exaggeratedly emphasizing these days as great mistakes committed by the Ag. VC. are the appointments of a non-Kwaran Senior Lecturer and a Professor from Kwara South as Director of Institute of Professional and Continuous Education and Academic Planning respectively.

These two scholars succeeded Ilorin Emirate born Professors in those offices who were also given other offices of equal status. This is what Mr. Onimago refers to when he writes:
He (Ag. VC) claimed that his actions were in the interest of reposting and as such, instead of filling the positions with Ilorin Emirate-born Staff, he replaced those removed with Staff who were of Kwara South extraction or even non-Kwarans. Hence this has led to the dominance of the key position formerly held by Ilorin Emirate Staff now held by the Kwara Southerners or non-Kwarans. Shouldn’t it even be questionable if a VC in an acting capacity can carry out such repositioning that has led to great injustice to a section of the State and has portrayed the said reposition as lopsidedness?

No doubt that Ilorin Emirate is blessed with many academia of high repute but the number of professors from a local government area of Kwara South is more than the number of professors from the entire Emirate.

Considering the facts given above, one may want to agree with those who assert that the university is “Kwara State University (KWASU) by name but Ilorin Emirate University (IEU) in practice”. In fact, pages 9-11 of order of proceeding of the 10th and 11th convocation ceremonies 16th December, 2023 reveals the assertion. Saliu Ayinde does not exaggerate when he writes:
Today at KWASU, out of nine Deans elected/appointed, Ilorin Emirate has six, representing about 67%. This excludes the Dean of student Affairs and that of Postgraduate SCHOOL. IN THE same vein, out of 33 Directors of Centres in the University, the Ilorin Emirate has 17, representing more than 50%.

The question of occupying the position of Ag. VC for more than six months should be for the one who appointed him to do what he considers best for the University from any part of the state. Since holding position of Director or Dean for more than ten years is not considered unconstitutional or illegal simply because who is to decide did not do so; hence, how can a decision to be taken by the MANAGER be counted against the messenger?!
For the Ag. VC and the Registrar being indigenes of same senatorial district is not a new story.

Emirate had produced VC and Ag. Registrar at the same time. Emirate beware of being hypocrite faaa wallahi. Whether or not the Ag. VC is confirmed as substantive VC, Ilorin Emirate born Professors should remember that there are more professors from Kwara South and North who are equally qualified and eligible for the same position.

KWASU (or IEU as some people view it), has been suffering from shortage of staff for long time under the influence of embargo on employment. With many pleads from the management to the Proprietor, the school was allowed to make replacement of staff who have left the system. The information at my disposal shows that Emirate still benefit more than 70% from the appointment.

To Ilorin Emirate born Professors who are lining up to complete the tenure of the deceased VC, be reminded that the VCship is not Imam, Clergy, Magaji or Daudu affairs where successors are determined even before the departure of the predecessor.

KWASU is Kwara State University and well deserving of all Kwarans!

Glad you saw it as well. Quite wrong!

When 3 people eat meals belonging to 16 deserving people covetously, that's called cheat and greed!

Just as LASU is to Lagos State, DELSU to Delta State, KWASU is to Kwara State and all Kwarans.

In as much as the university's purpose is for the development of the Kwara community and it's motto remains ...the Green University for community development and entrepreneurship, KWASU will continue to rightfully belong to all Kwarans with equal rights in there.

The Emirates should just stop politicising the matters of the university. Else, it will continue to mar the latter insofar it can.
