No straight answer to this

The mother MAY be drunk and beat the daughter cos she's intoxicated, or due to anger, alcohol bring out the worst in humans

The daughter MAY be underage so can't drink alcohol

The daughter MAY be drunk which made the mother beat her.

Just a brain twister. It can go both the subject way or the object way. 'Because acts as an adverb of reason modifying the verb 'beat'. Subjective reason would mean that the mother was drunk, while objective reason would mean that the daughter was drunk. There was no specification to who was drunk.

Like I said, it's a brain twister.

The QUESTION ought to be reported in a past form. Generally, Narrative writings are reported in past forms.
Therefore, the right sentence is...
A Mother beat up her daughter because she was drunk. However at this point we still don't know who was drunkšŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚, but the word " beat" should take precedence.

Typing BEATS makes it look like her daughter is still receiving the beating since beats is part of the present.

This is an ambiguous sentence/statement. Either of them them could be drunk; hence there's is no answer to the above question.

@Op, this a contextual situation. Research on 'Contexts in English' for better understanding.

It's grammatically correct but doesn't give full context. "She" could be referring to the mother or the daughter.

The correct way to express it is something like:

"A mother beats up her daughter because she (the mother) was drunk".

"A mother beats up her daughter because she (the daughter) was drunk".

"A mother beats up her daughter because she, the daughter, was drunk".

"A mother beats up her daughter because she, the mother, was drunk".

Update:

Even better ways to provide clarity:

ā€œA mother beats up her daughter, who was drunkā€.

ā€œA mother, who was drunk, beats up her daughterā€.

This has nothing do with grammar... It's an issue of context. If you don't have prior context you may not know who's slapping who...

It's definitely the daughter that was drunk and that's why she was beaten.
Mothers maintain their sanity even when drunk so it can't influence their decision to beat their child.
Only drunk men can

Or have you seen any news about a mother raping her son?
It's always men raping their daughter

Dear co-debator, I hope I have been able to convince and not confuse u grin

You can see the sentence in two ways.

1. You can say her mother was drunk because she's the subject. Someone could use logic and say the daughter was drunk but it's totally false.

2. Alternatively, you can call it an ambiguous statement and rephrase it. Nobody should be making sentences like this.

Write: Mrs. Dora beat up her daughter, Emily, because her daughter went partying with other teenagers and came back to the house drunk.

In this case, we know who beat up who and the reason for the action...

Correct, she was drunk that's why she beat up her daughter would have been the reverse

Straight answer. The Daughter.
Alcohol can not make you beat up someone. It can only push you to fight someone.
Person you can beat, no matter your state you can still beat up that person. Alcohol can not make you beat someone you can't ordinary beat.
