BREAKING: NFF Appoints Finidi George As Super Eagles Head Coach

George’s immediate task will be to guide the Super Eagles to victory in two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic in Uyo and Abidjan respectively, in a little over five weeks.

The board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee to appoint Finidi George as Head Coach of the Super Eagles.

George, who spent 20 months as assistant to coach José Santos Peseiro before the Portuguese voluntarily left the post following the accomplishment of the Africa Cup of Nations runner-up position at Cote d’Ivoire 2023, took charge of the squad in an interim capacity during two friendly matches in Morocco last month.

His squad edged Ghana 2-1 in the first match, ending an 18-year winless streak against the Black Stars, but then lost 0-2 to Mali in the second game.

George, a member of the so-styled ‘Golden Generation’ that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Tunisia and emerged as the second most entertaining team in Nigeria’s debut at the FIFA World Cup finals in the USA the same year, won 62 caps for Nigeria, including featuring at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup finals. He also won gold, silver, and bronze medals from the 1992, 1994, 2000, and 2002 AFCON tournaments.

The 52-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam (The Netherlands) and Real Betis (Spain) forward, who made a scoring debut for the fatherland in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Burkina Faso at the National Stadium, Lagos on 27th July 1991, also featured for Calabar Rovers and Sharks FC in the domestic scene before heading to Europe.

He assisted Rashidi Yekini (of blessed memory) to score Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal against Bulgaria in Dallas, USA on 19th June 1994.

George had scored the goal that took Nigeria to that FIFA World Cup debut, when he put Nigeria ahead against hosts Algeria in a crucial qualifier in Algiers on 8th October 1993. The match eventually ended 1-1 and earned Nigeria a ticket to the finals in America.

George’s immediate task will be to guide the Super Eagles to victory in two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic in Uyo and Abidjan respectively, in a little over five weeks.

The matches are must-win encounters, with the Super Eagles lagging in third place in Group C of the African campaign behind Rwanda and South Africa.

Nigeria coach is been pick base on sentiment and Nigerians crave for local coach. Someone that fail to qualify Enyimba for the champions league and even finish last in the Africa super league undecided SMH

Finally. Headmaster is now Head Coach. I was waiting for this moment and I'm sure he will do well like the Big Boss, Late Stephen Keshi.

One of our major problems is the journalists we have. They have been brainwashed by Europe that someone that looks like them cann
never do well. You will hear them talking about Shearer, Guardiola, Mourinho and all those things without considering that our own environment is unique. They will whip up sentiments against local coaches but they will give the foreign coach time to build a team.

They will start to disturb the local coach's team selection and say the foreign based players do not respect him but when we hire foreign coaches who never stay in Nigeria to watch league games, it's okay for us to waste dollars undecided God bless Keshi who called the bluff of the superstars, if you do anyhow, you see the way out. That's how the local boys won us AFCON 2013, even Russia 2014, who has surpassed his achievement since

Until you show me one team that has won the world cup with a foreign coach, there is no magic you can do to change the winning of the ultimate prize in football, go local! E get some kain things wey be say na local patriotic citizens go do that a foreigner will never do because it is love for country and people.

Since i started watching football, we have been going to the drawing board but that board is always written with white chalk, na why we no know where we de go grin

It is to our advantage that Finidi George has International experience so nothing new by the abroad boys who disrespect the locals. Using local coaches stops the bleeding of our purse by you know who to hire a foreigner and pay him dollars - NFF must never owe this new coach .

Africans need to stop the colonial mentality, no one is going to help you and we can learn from the best but until we get there, we cannot keep whitening our minds. If Finidi fumbles, we send him out but let us keep that money within because it is our own people that will still gain from hotels to coach's assistants to travels and everything he does as a coach. Nigeria first
Only the white man can lead us to Eldorado, you are dreaming, no one is coming to help you. Everyone is there for their selfish interest. The last coach used us for his resume, here is hoping NFF provide George with all the support he needs and both officials/politicians stay off the team angry

Wrong move, Samson siasia is the only proven local coach for now who can handle the eagles, if the NFF really care why not wait till siasia ban is over and negotiate with him, and have finidi George as assistant and interim coach, at least siasia has been proven, tested and trusted, and he play attacking football too.
