His sudden death occured while on active service at the National Assembly, on Tuesday.

News360 Nigeria had reported that a senior customs officer have reportedly collapse and died during probe by the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee.


“Sir, I may need to take water".

Those were his last words approximately five minutes into his presentation before the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee.

His request was obliged. But he slumped and passed on.

Ironically, when the Customs chieftain walked into the National Assembly Complex, on Tuesday, there was no indication that he would not walk out of the parliament alive. He looked hale and hearty and walked spritely.

Andrew had led a team of top customs officers to the House of Representatives for an investigative hearing by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

The deceased and his colleagues appeared before the Committee to make presentations on the revenue remittances by the Service.

“These levies as stated earlier are listed as federation account levies and it is the responsibility of the office of the Accountant General to say this money is for sharing in FAAC, but for whatever reason that this money, which the Nigeria Customs Service has remitted into the appropriate account was not sent to the federation account, is what the service cannot give explanation,” was his opening salvo.

At that point, an alarmed Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Bamidele Salam, interjected by asking: “So your position is that this money was actually sent to the account provided by the Accountant-General and that the obligation of now taking it to the federation account is out of your own purview?”

Responding, the deceased had said, “Yes. The same thing applies for 2017 and 2017 can be seen in the next page. If you look at 2016, it encompasses other levies. Sir, I may need to take water.”

“Go ahead,” Bamidele had said, adding, “Do you need tea? Can somebody please attend to him?”

Shortly after, he collapsed and was rushed to the House of Representatives Clinic, where he died.

Essien, who was born in November 1967, joined the NCS in 1989. He hailed from Nsit-Ubium LGA in Akwa Ibom state.

More reason why we need to take our health serious. Nigerians only go to the doctor when they are really sick or at the point of death. We can avoid a lot of chronic disease with just one annual wellness visit, or even once every two years. That way, things can be detected early and promptly treated. This saves money and life down the line.

RIP to the man. It's so painful to lose a love one like this... just imagine this man left home this morning, healthy and sound. Now they have to inform the family that he's no more... so sad.

Sometimes, there is a price for being competent and brilliant. The responsibility he took up yesterday was the responsibility of the Comptroller General of Customs. The CG was the one invited to face the committee but he pushed it to his most senior DCG to represent him.

If you watch the video, the man sitting to the right of DC Essien is a DCG and the man sitting to his left is a comptroller. The DCG is in charge of Finance, Account and technical services of Customs and the Comptroller is in charge of Accounts. Both are very senior officers but they still decided to push the presentation to a Deputy Controller.

Maybe he would still be alive today if he was not the one given the responsibility to make the presentation to the committee. In as much as there may be underlying medical condition, the fear of making that presentation triggered his medical condition and ultimately led to his death. Senior officers who make all the decisions and enjoy all the benefits of their big ranks should take more responsibility and stop pushing duties like this to those under them. May God rest his soul.

Don't steal or create an impression of theft of public fund if you don't have the balls to the face the panel of inquiry.
He may have died of cardiac arrest or other cardiovascular complications but, one thing I am sure of is that, it was precipitated by the phobia of facing the panel.
Our people are very funny, they don't quiver when they are eating fat from the national revenue but, the moment they are surmoned to come and explain, they start fidgeting or even slump and die of phobia.

Why will a DC be the one making the presentations to a house committee? He is too low in rank na. OP said " he led a team of senior officers..." He cannot , when there is a DCG there with him, a whooping 3 rank above him! they probably pushed him forward as a fall guy. I'm surprised the house committee allowed him to present. I guess like many civilians here, they probably don't know, he is not senior enough to appear before them.
A DC is like a Lieutenant Colonel, just a rank above Major.. what happened to the Generals? This country is a joke
