IJAW FOODS.

"ONUNU."

Called Kpangbudu by Arogbo-ijaws, Onunu by the Kalabari-Ijaws, known as Ipopoburu by Okrika-Ijaws, Ebubu by Nembe-Ijaws and fondly called Opopo by the Ibani-Ijaw people.

Onunu is a traditional delicacy of the Ijaws.

This Ijaw very rich meal is a mixture of over riped plantain and yam boiled and pounded together with a little salt and the best quality palm oil to blend.

Onunu is best served with a spicy fish pepper soup, yellow soup or native stew.

You want to learn how to prepare ONUNU?

Here are the ingredients and method of preparation.

INGREDIENTS
•Yam
•Ripe plantain
•Palm oil

Method:

Put the yam to boil, when it has cooked right about halfway, add the ripe plantains.

Before you pound ensure that both the yams and the plantains have cooked through till soft.

Start to pound the yam first because of its pulp and stretchy nature, once almost smooth, add the ripe plantain.

Once you have gotten both ingredients to a smooth consistency, add a little salt and palm oil.

The mash is still hot, which will take away the curdling taste of palm oil.

Finish off the pounding, until the palm oil properly mixes well, changing the colour to yellow.
Excellence! Your delicious Onunu is ready.

There's nothing special about this meal, just another way to eat yam and plantain both very starchy foods. There's nothing nutritious about this meal, it's just another way to get pot belly and diabetes. We are in the 21st century and most of us are educated, its high time we start applying some of that education rather than continuing with old traditions that are unhealthy. Eat salad, include grains, fruits, vegetables, protein and drink lots of water.

This is the original swallow.

The last girl that gave me this stole my heart without knowing.

Dear men, if you don't want to have a soft spot for her, don't taste this from her.

Worth trying out if you stay in any of the Ijaw states.

It is not only an Ijaw meal but the Ikwerres eat it too. Infact they claim it's one of their traditional foods and it's right there in history books.
