ABUJA – The Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, may have chosen to breathe new life into the moribund national steel complex of Ajaokuta Steel Company Ltd and the National Iron Ore Mining Company, Itakpe, with the approval for the re-operationalisation of both entities.

Disclosing the Acting President’s decision in a briefing in Abuja, yesterday, the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, said government has made available about N650 million for the resuscitation of completed units of both entities.

According to her, the units include a portion of the Thermal Power Plant, the light section rolling mill and the wire rod mill, the engineering workshops at ASCL, and the Bergeaud Plant, as well as minimal mining operations and processing at the NIOMCO.

No country can develop without steelworks and steel plants. Truth is Ajaokuta is already too small to serve Nigeria, but it is a start.
The painful fact is that Ajaokuta was planned and built decades ago along with Oshogbo Machines Tools. I'm not sure how long ago now, 20 - 30 years? Thats how much time we have lost to corruption and ineptitude in that sector.

Losing time? You may want to know where the original site was for the steel complex due to nearness of raw materials like coal and iron ore before it was moved to the present location just to ensure that no serious development comes to the East. It is clear that we may never know what we have lost as a nation due to the connivance, wickedness, lies and murder of innocent people in this country while we pretend that everything is ok.

Over 40% of electricity being generated in the US is from coal alone and we have about the finest quality coal in the world in Enugu and yet the state of power supply is embarrassingly low. All in the name of One Nigeria.

Same old bullcrap approach. Jonathan is a crook, he has already approved N650 million without carrying out a study of the existing complex.

Before approving any funds, he should have invited minning experts from overseas and representatives of foreign steel companies to do a quick study on Ajaokuta and deliver a detailed report and recommendations on what needs to be done to revive the facility, instead he has quickly approved funds.

You can't resuscitation a white elephant project without conducting a study to evaluate the current state of the equipments in the facility. That is the norm everywhere in the world.

When did this guy become the acting president again? just a few weeks ago and he is just approving funds. What is N650 million for ,is there any detail purpose for that money. Or is this another set of cash that will go missing.

Besides shouldn't he be fixing the electricity problem first, how is the Ajaokuta going to survive without 24hr electricity

With all the huge desserts we have in the north,no one in government can think of building a solar plant

Egypt is already building the largest Solar plant in Africa and egypt is not as rich as Nigeria

Jonathan is just opening another avenue to enrich his pocket and that of his loyalist. Ajaokuta KO, Itakpe ni. He should focus on power and leave the steel thing Governmnet have waste a lot of money on it anybody that have been to Ajaokuta and that knows the history of the company will know that this proposal is to open gate to steal money.

But seriously, have we weighed the remarks that acompanied the release of 650 million? It covers so many areas. I am just a layman in that area, it seems there is no financial magic going on there (like the Abuja airport work that went from 4 billion to 64 billion - a whopping 16 times the original estimate).

According to her, the units include a portion of the Thermal Power Plant, the light section rolling mill and the wire rod mill, the engineering workshops at ASCL, and the Bergeaud Plant, as well as minimal mining operations and processing at the NIOMCO.
Like I said, that seems like a hell of a lot to acheive with 650 million Naira.

Re: Jonathan Resuscitates Ajaokuta Steel, Niomco by davidif: 10:38am On Apr 30, 2010
Please, they should sell Ajaokuta to the highest bidder like Arcelor Mittal or POSCO. We have spent billions on this thing with nothing to show for. Unfortunately, several billions later, it turns out that the technology and the plant itself is very outdated. Steel works is a very very capital intensive project which the Nigerian govt cannot afford to undertake as of right now since they have other committments to the general populace so they should sell there stake in the project.

While they are at it, they should sell Ewekoro and the coal mines to the highest bidder maybe this people would know how to run this things well.

Why overseas? What mmakes you think Nigerian surveyors haven't been there? Kolo mentality!!!

ha ha ha, this would be a funny statement if it weren't so false. If you for once leave Nigeria, you would understand how faaaaaaaaaaaaaar behind Nigeria is in the aspect of science and technology. I wouldn't hire a Nigerian trained scientist to do ANYTHING for me. By the way, i thought we were in the era of globalization? What is wrong with procuring the services of labor from different parts of the world??

The acting president should learn to do one thing at a time. What's his agenda? What nigerians need is stable electricity and good roads for now not some bogus white elephant project that will not see the light of the day.
Re: Jonathan Resuscitates Ajaokuta Steel, Niomco by davidif: 4:03am On May 01, 2010
You are right, but he has to know how to multi-task afterall doesn't he have a minister who is supposed to be in charge of this thing?

I said he should sell the site to the highest bidder and focus on other things like electricity and co.

Budget - Representatives Charge Jonathan On Ajaokuta Steel

Jos — The House of Representatives' Committee on Steel has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to make more funds available for the resuscitation of Ajaokuta Steel Company for the nation's steel sector to develop.

The committee's chairman, Sadiq Asema Muhammed, made the call in Jos over the weekend when his committee visited the National Metallurgical Development Centre (NMDC) to assess the state of the steel sector.

"We are urging Mr. President to kindly make money available in this budget to complete some of these critical areas in the steel sector, especially the completion of the Ajaokuta Steel," he said.

The chairman, who said the steel project was almost 99 per cent completed, added, "we are saying that the funds should be raised from the budget so that we can have a reliable way of earning money to complete this project. Ajaokuta Steel needs only N83 billion according to the recent audit done by the former manufacturers of that place."

Earlier in his welcome address, the Director General of the NMDC Ibrahim Madugu identified the challenges facing the centre as including lack of funds and poor power supply.
