Jonathan’s Aides In Abuja Independence Day Bomb Saga by appletango: 11:48pm On Dec 21, 2010
An account of the role played by aides to Goodluck Jonathan in trying to convince Heny Okah to dump the blame for the Independence Day bomb blast in Abuja on “Northern elements” are emerging, just as Mr. Okah's lawyers received the news of a January 4, 2011 date to appeal his denial of bail application which has enabled his continued detention in South Africa.  Last month, he was denied bail by a South African magistrate after the judge said "The accused was untruthful and he lied to the court" .

Saharareporters has obtained a confidential report which might a major role in the trial that details calls made to Okah by several key Jonathan aides the night after the bomb blasts, at a time MEND was claiming responsibility for them.   Those named in the secret report include Jonathan's former ADC, Moses Jituboh, a police officer whose current designation is “Personal Security Officer to the president;"  the Minister for the Niger Delta, Godsday Orubebe; and Tony Uranta, the same Jonathan operative who was recently named in the $50,000 bribery of the Save Nigeria Group (SNG).

The secret document shows that four calls were traced to Mr. Orubebe, and several calls as well as a key text message were traced to Mr. Uranta, who used telephone numbers: +2348075407801 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              +2348075407801      end_of_the_skype_highlighting, +2347084961205 and +2348069280206 to communicate as he acted as an intermediary between Mr. Okah and President Jonathan up to the night after the Abuja bombing in October.

The document shows that after the bombs went off, Uranta sent a text message to Okah, saying, "Please get JG to withdraw claim," ["JG" being the shortened form of "Jomo Gbomo", the mysterious but widely-known email name used in MEND releases] but Okah responded by text, saying , "Don't even think about that".

Mr. Uranta responded with another text message to Mr. Okah, saying the critical words, "Govt will blame bombing on Northern elements."
That was the last text message before Mr. Uranta joined a delegation of Niger Delta delegates which “commiserated” with Jonathan over the bombings.  Meanwhile, as Jonathan possibly thought the deal to blame the blast on "Northern elements" had sailed through with Mr. Okah, he announced publicly that MEND was not responsible for the bombing even as the MEND had already claimed responsibility.

As was exclusively reported by SaharaReporters, Mr. Okah's house was ransacked by the South African police the day before the Abuja bombings, and his phones and laptops—as well as those of his children—confiscated. The search had been initiated by the Nigerian government, having been tipped off by Western security agents about the impending blast.  MEND had also issued press releases announcing its intentions prior to the blast.

The confidential document revealed that Jonathan called his South African counterpart, President Jacob Zuma of South Africa to have Okah arrested to "prevent" the deadly blast.  In turn, Zuma directly asked South African prosecutor, Shawn Abrahams, to get a Magistrate to issue a search warrant and an arrest warrant for Okah's arrest.

Two South African Magistrates, Nonhle Jadezweni and PJ du Plessis, were contacted to issue the search warrant and warrant of arrest. Both initially refused to comply, for lack of sufficient information or disclosure of course of action, but Mr. Du Plessis was told by the prosecutor that it would be in the interest of the Nigeria-South African bilateral relationship.

As Du Plessis was contemplating the next course of action, Mr. Abrahams put a man whom he said was President Zuma on the phone to tell the judge how important it was to issue an arrest warrant for Okah. The prosecutor then went ahead to produce an Interpol "Red Notice" which was issued in 2007 on Okah.

On the part of Magistrate Jadezweni, a search warrant was issued to the effect that Okah was a violent criminal with stockpiles of arms in his Johannesburg mansion. A search into Okah house did [not] yield any arms.

Dumisa Ntsebeza SC has now joined Okah's defense team and will be with him at the South Gauteng High Court in Johanessburg in two weeks to try and secure his bail.  Okah's legal team is requesting the magistrate records as a way of proving that his arrest and detention was orchestrated politically because of his refusal to be used by Jonathan to endorse his candidature as president in the upcoming 2011 general elections.

If Okah's trial proceeds as planned, revelations from his team will ultimately reveal the extent of the Nigerian government’s involvement with Okah at the highest levels.   The involvement of President Zuma and the Johannesburg Magistrate, Heine Louw, were attributed to pressures on South African business interests in Nigeria. Mr. Louw is due for promotion to the South Africa High Court system.

Meanwhile, MEND sources said they are planning series of attacks that would cripple Nigerian oil production between now and January 2011. Chevron has already suspended production due to recent pipeline sabotage.  A MEND source told SaharaReporters that their sabotage campaign would affect as much as 500,000 barrels per day.

MEND's threats follow the disappearance of four militants from Port Harcourt prison a few days ago. Our source said they fear that Tamuno Tonye Kuna, known as "Commander Obese", who recently surrendered to the Joint Military Task Force, may have been killed by JTF operatives along with the four missing militants.

“Commander Obese” was reportedly lured out of the creeks by Farrah Dagogo with his fighters and made to turn over some hostages.

Said a MEND source to SaharaReporters, "President Jonathan promised Obese N500 million and a second Amnesty, but they arrested him as soon as he surrendered his forces."

Fresh Air 2011!

hmmmmm,  speaking of your "fresh air":

President Goodluck Jonathan is pitching his candidacy on a “breath of fresh air” but revelations from a 2006 Joint Task Force on fighting corruption has shown that the man whose bid for the 2011 presidency has polarized his party has a filthy past.

Also, former State Governors were found to have breached the code of conduct for public officials and were recommended for prosecution in line with the Code of Conduct Bureau Act.

The Joint Task Force empanelled by former President Olusegun Obasanjo on fighting corruption comprised the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), The Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigerian Police. Former Chairman of the EFCC and presidential aspirant under the platform of the Alliance Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Nuhu Ribadu, was theChairman of the Task Force.

The part of the report (EXCERPT Number 11) concerning President Jonathan (who was then Governor of Bayelsa State) listed the following as grounds for his prosecution:

Substance of Charges (1) False Declaration of Assets

(i) Lexus Jeep worth N18 million claimed to have been acquired through savings in 2004. Verification reveals that the Jeep was a gift collected in contravention of the CCB Act of 1990. Same for BMW 7351 Series bought in 2005 worth N5.5 million;

(ii) Acquisition of properties outside legitimate income; Seven Bedroom Duplex acquired in 2001 worth N18 million at Otuke Ogbia LGA, Four Bedroom Duplex acquired in 2003 worth N15 million at Goodluck Jonathan Street, Yenegoa;
Five Bedroom Duplex - acquired in 2003 worth N25 million at Citec Villas, Gwarimpa II – Abuja.

Overall, that Task Force identified three issues to wit:

(i) Some public officers had declared Assets far above what they owned as their declaration could not be substantiated. A case of anticipatory declaration.

(ii) Some public officers did not declare some of the properties they acquired while in office.

(iii) The issue of ownership of foreign account and late declaration was treated with levity. The consequences of the above is that so far 15 State Governors have been found to have individually contravened some of the Provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Part I to the 5th Schedule, especially on the issue of false declaration of Assets and or acquisition of properties outside legitimate means.

According to the report, which from all indications was not acted upon or was partially acted upon by Obasanjo, State Governors and the various chargeable offences identified against them have been reproduced below:-

Code of conduct Tribunal Findings on State Governors

BRIEF ON THE ACTIVITIES OF' THE JOINT TASK FORCE
The President and Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria - Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, in June 2006 set up a Joint Task Force on fighting corruption comprising the following organizations namely; the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), The Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigerian Police. On the whole each of the Establishments named above contributed five members of staff on the team.

The activities of this Joint Task Force came under the control and supervision of the EFCC hence its Chairman - Mr. Nuhu Ribadu is the Head of the Task Force.

The Task Force commenced its activities in a temporary office located at Asokoro. During its inaugural meeting, the team noted that its main functions were to complement the activities of their primary establishments.

ASSETS VERIFICATION EXERCISE

The team commenced its activities by embarking on the verification of Assets of Public Officers. This is to give it background knowledge to identify corrupt public officers for further investigation. In doing this, the team decided to collate copies of the Assets Declaration of all State Governors as a starting point. The forms were scrutinized and the verification exercise commenced. So far thirty-two State Governors have had their Assets verified. The remaining State Governors have been asked to schedule appropriate dates that they would make themselves available for the exercise. The Task Force has also notified the Deputy Governors, Speakers of State Assemblies and Secretaries, to the various State Governments to prepare for the verification exercise.

(11) DR. GOODLUCK JONATHAN - GOVERNOR BAYELSA STATE

Tony Uranta was not involved in the SNG bribery scandal. Bakare called Uranta (an SNG member) to return the money to GEJ. Uranta did not give nor receive any bribe.

He confirmed that the cash was immediately returned to the sender through Uranta, shortly after it was presented to the SNG delegation.
The SNG convener told Saharareporters that his team felt embarrassed and offended by the orchestrated attempt by Jonathan and his team to buy the SNG’s support through illicit means.
An angry Bakare said “you can quote me. I don’t do deals and I don’t lie. Tony (Uranta) could be saving his own face. Tony lied that he didn’t collect the money from us.
“There are living witnesses. Orubebe has confirmed to me that the money was returned. The president is aware through Oronto Douglas that we returned his money through Tony.”

errrr, he did more than that. he was one of those denying the rumours:

The confirmation came in the midst of denial of earlier report by Tony Uranta, one of Jonathan’s political operatives.

Uranta had claimed on his Facebook page on Monday that Saharareporters misrepresented the crux of the meeting between the president and the Pastor Bakare-led delegation.

Uranta denied that Jonathan discussed his ambition to run for office with the SNG delegation and also said no money was offered to the SNG team.

anyway, that's neither here nor there and i'd say that he has more pressing matters at the moments, no? like a court date in SA perhaps  grin grin
Re: Jonathan’s Aides In Abuja Independence Day Bomb Saga by debosky(m): 11:58am On Dec 22, 2010
This isn't anything new in my opinion, Okah already said as much that people close to GEJ were putting pressure on him to get MEND to retract it's claim over the bombing.

While I do question SR's credibility at times, the level of detail in this particular report indicates they have gained access to some confidential information.

I keep hearing Uranta described as a 'GEJ operative'. Does he hold any official position in the government or is he just an unofficial hatchet man?

The funniest bit here is Beaf - when we get confirmation from other sources, he will start backtracking like Michael Jackson doing the moonwalk. grin

SR got the SNG bribing scandal information correctly, there is little reason to doubt the account they've produced now.

That said, if Uranta is an unofficial GEJ assistant, he offers the president plausible denial of the goings on. Orubebe on the other hand is a minister and could pose a serious problem, though there's no hard evidence on his involvement beyond alleged phone calls.
Re: Jonathan’s Aides In Abuja Independence Day Bomb Saga by Xfactoria: 12:47pm On Dec 22, 2010
I am beginning to doubt SR or maybe the authenticity of these claims. The whole thing does not just add up!

First and foremost, anybody could get the numbers displayed in this write up. Journalists have a way of reaching government aides for clarification of infos and do have such aide's numbers. I do not think attaching numbers to this write up lends credibility to it. At least Kobojunkie just supplied a website where Tony Uranta's number were displayed. Anybody could quote numbers.

Secondly, why would Jonathan want to prevent the bombings at all cost by soliciting the help of SA authorities to effect the arrest of Okah some days before the bombings and yet have plans to blame "northern elements" for the bombings? We were reliably informed of how the British intelligence had briefed the Presidency of Okah's plot days before the bombings. The intelligence report also has details of how much (millions of dollars) was wired to Okah by IBB via Dokpesi when he visited SA some 2 weeks before the bombing. So when Jonathan spoke to absolve MEND and rather blamed some unscropulous elements in Nigeria being aided by collaborators abroad, he was speaking from an informed position albeit naive and undiplomatic. GEJ also knows the implications of saying the much that he knows about Okah and his backers because if it turns out that there are no concrete evidences to nail them, it would be a political goof that he will not recover from.

Thirdly, why would GEJ want the support or endorsement of a criminal on the run to win an election? Is it that Okah on his own can win a ward election in a free and fair contest in Bayelsa let alone the whole of Nigeria? It is still not clear to me how Okah will genuinely help GEJ become president in 2011.

Lastly, it could be true that some of GEJ's aides who are Niger Deltans like Orubebe might have contatced Okah to drop his plan to topple GEJ's government on the grounds that GEJ represents the hope of all Ijaws which Okah claimed to be fighting for. That would not be out of place and Okah being an associate of Lucifer could turn everything against them just to survive the indictment of masterminding the bomb blasts.

One thing is sure, Okah was behind the bombings and we should not be led into a state of confusion on this.
Re: Jonathan’s Aides In Abuja Independence Day Bomb Saga by debosky(m): 12:55pm On Dec 22, 2010
X-factoria:

Secondly, why would Jonathan want to prevent the bombings at all cost by soliciting the help of SA authorities to effect the arrest of Okah some days before the bombings and yet have plans to blame "northern elements" for the bombings?

The motivation is very clear - Arresting Okah, claiming it was IBB who sponsored him absolves ‘MEND’and reinforces the idea that the amnesty program has succeeded. This puts GEJ in good light in the ND and puts the blame squarely on the North and paints them as desperate for power.

We were reliably informed of how the British intelligence had briefed the Presidency of Okah's plot days before the bombings. The intelligence report also has details of how much (millions of dollars) was wired to Okah by IBB via Dokpesi when he visited SA some 2 weeks before the bombing.

I don’t know much about this so called ‘intelligence briefing’ so I’d like to see a link if you have one. Secondly, the issue of IBB wiring money via Dokpesi appears to be a lame attempt by GEJ to ‘eliminate’ a rival.

He should simply have shut up - absolving one group smacks of desperation. If it was truly MEND, it shows GEJ as weak and unable to control his own zone. Because he was so afraid of this happening, he went ahead to make that hasty statement.

Okah helps GEJ by allowing him to blame IBB and ‘unscrupulous elements’ and not MEND as explained above. If the amnesty is working, then MEND should be ineffective.

Anything is possible, but this is highly unlikely. These individuals appear to be quite close to GEJ and it would be very surprising to find them working against him.

One thing is sure, Okah was behind the bombings and we should not be led into a state of confusion on this.

There is no such ‘sure’ thing. Despite the ransacking of his home in SA, no evidence was found as such. All the ‘evidence’ has been from the SSS in Nigeria, and they are simply tools in the hand of GEJ.

Dude, your post above is filled with a lot of conjecture and false claims. Do you mind at least providing some back up for any of the claims you make above? I mean it is too much Google work to verify even one of your statements.

It's high time we queried the integrity of GEJ in the bombing.

^^ No account numbers, no mention of the banks, nothing? Why have the originators of the transfers not been arrested? Where is the evidence of onward transfer to Okah?

Another weak attempt to rope in Dokpesi at all costs.

No mention of the name Dokpesi in that in that whole article. Even the name of IBB was only to point out that he was among those not affected by the blast.

No mention of the name Henry Okah, and no mention of Dokpesi wiring any amounts to Okah. You are also informed, at the end of the article that the SSS released Dokpesi after questioning.

Ogbeni, how did you now link IBB, Dokpesi to Okah? The articles you have above make no such connections, so how did you arrive at that one?  shocked

Madam, you really want to be spoon-fed? I can't get the details of the intelligence report but several sources both in the press and the various intelligence sources reiterated the involvement of these guys.

You posted links that do not, in anyway, verify any of the claims you made earlier, and you think I am the one to be spoon fed here? Come on!!!

Where are your "several" sources? Where are they? Provide links so we can all see for ourselves. The very articles you posted tell you that the SSS is no longer holding Dokpesi, and IBB has not been connected to date, but you somehow want us to believe they have just cause you say so?
