In what is an astonishing act of self-incrimination, Edo Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has confessed that the Godwin Obaseki-led administration secured favorable court rulings to remain in office for another four years with underhand expenses that ran into billions.

The huge sum, allegedly sourced from the state treasury, went to judges and other actors in Nigeria’s judicial system, the Deputy Governor insinuated.

He disclosed this in a supposedly secret meeting held recently with leaders of the PDP in Auchi, details of which were made available to the public by one of his media aides, Benjamin Atu.

Telling on himself and revealing the tactics deployed months ago in the post-election litigation challenging the victory of Godwin Obaseki in court, Philip Shaibu said justice was no longer available without dollars and that the victory of the Obaseki-administration was as a result of being the “highest bidder”.

The statement has thrown up several questions, the most pertinent amongst them being the role Philip Shaibu played in facilitating the ‘dollars-for-judgment’ judicial fraud and which members of the bench, from the lower courts to the apex body, he and his principal enlisted.

His remarks and sharp criticism is perhaps the most direct accusation made against judges and other officials of the country’s judiciary, and it comes in the wake of the Federal Government’s efforts to reform the country’s justice delivery system.

If the Federal Government is to succeed in this quest, then the Deputy Governor must be made to provide a detailed account of what he knows about the ‘dollar-for-judgment’ scheme. As a self-declared beneficiary who likely handled or witnessed the corrupt negotiations, it only makes for common sense that he is summoned for investigations and made to name individuals approached and enlisted in the Obaseki-administration’s dollar bid for justice.

Importantly too, the administration, which has failed to form a cabinet a year into re-election, must explain to the people of Edo State the source of the billions that went into the insinuated procurement of favorable court rulings, and what effect it has on the poor state of things where unpaid salaries and decaying infrastructure have combined to put Edo State in a permanent state of economic comatose and social anxiety.

The Deputy Governor, according to the released statement, finished his confessions with a charge to members of the PDP to continue to work for the party’s political supremacy in the state. The meeting, meant to be secret, is only one of many Shaibu has personally hosted since the re-election, according to available public records.

This lends credence to the growing sentiment that instead of focusing on governance and contributing his part to supporting the rickety administration, Philip Shaibu has committed energy and resources to building his own political structure and clout ahead of a planned 2024 Governorship ambition as successor to Governor Obaseki.

This development has reduced the Edo State Government House to a babel tower of confusion, with several self-motivated actors working at cross-purposes for personal political gain.
