INVESTIGATING THE TURN AROUND MAINTENANCE (TAM) PROJECTS OF NIGERIAN REFINERIES: A STEP BY THE NIGERIAN SENATE TO REDUCE THE COUNTRY’S DEPENDENCE ON IMPORTED PETROLEUM PRODUCTS

On Thursday, April 18, 2024, I led members of the Nigerian Senate Ad-hoc Committee investigating the Turn Around Maintenance (TAM) Projects of Nigerian Refineries to an oversight visit to Warri Refinery. During the tour which was followed by a courtesy visit to His Royal Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Olu of Warri at his palace, we inspected the various units of the Warri Refinery and observed the progress of the ongoing TAM projects. We also held discussions with the refinery’s management team led by the Managing Director, Efifia Chu and representatives of the contractor handling the project to address any challenges they may be facing.

In my remarks at the event which was also attended by officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) led by the Corporation’s Executive Vice-President (Downstream), Mr Dapo Segun, I emphasized the importance of ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of the TAM projects, and stressed the need for proper documentation and monitoring of the projects to ensure that they are completed on time and within budget. I further urged the officials of the NNPCL to prioritize the maintenance of our refineries in order to improve their operational efficiency and reduce the country’s dependence on imported petroleum products.

The oversight visit was a productive one and I am confident that with proper oversight and monitoring, the TAM projects of the Nigerian refineries will be successfully completed, leading to a more efficient and self-sufficient petroleum industry in the country.
