They recognized the difference between a Spanish man and Portuguese man despite these people speaking almost the same language. The same applies to Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Before, during and after the war ikwerres have always maintained that they have no historic ties with the Igbos. Ikwerres formed the Ogbakor Ikwerre Convention in 1963 even before the Igbos had their Ohaneze. This was years before the war as to say ikwerres disassociated from them after the war. In 1965 in what is today known as Rumuomasi Declaration Ikwerre posited that they were neither Ijaw, Ogonis or any other tribe including the Igbos but Ikwerre and a distinct ethnic nationality.

Nobody forced these identity on these people. From their history they know who they are. In the south here we have other ethnic groups apart from the Igbos. These other ethnic groups know who is Igbo, Ikwerre, Ogoni, Ijaw and others. They know this right from time immemorial. The Ijaw man knows who is Ikwerre and is who is Igbo. This can't be changed now. Scientific studies carried out to establish ties between the ikwerres and Igbos recently came out that there was no relation.
