Vice President Kashim Shettima says the President Bola Tinubu’s administration is determined to eradicate corruption without fear or favouritism.

He stated this on Thursday at the Second Edition of The Chronicle Roundtable in Abuja where he said the government has been working to reduce the unemployment rate in the country.

The event was focused on examining how Tinubu’s administration’s economic and social agenda will transform Nigeria.

In attendance include the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris; the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters in the office of the Vice President, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed; and former Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Shamsudeen Usman; among others.

Some members of the President’s party, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are currently being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for sundry corruption charges.

The latest in the list is ex-Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, who the anti-graft agency is prosecuting on 19 counts bordering on alleged money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds to the tune of N80.2 billion.

The matter is before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Let's be fair here. EFCC alone cannot handle all these corruption cases at the same time. You people don't understand that investigating crimes and pursuing court cases cost money.

I have always maintained that the EFCC should change their strategy. Focus on stopping crimes from happening instead of chasing culprits up and down.

Here's my idea for a better EFCC
I want to see an EFCC that's proactive in their approach. Get the executive to review the EFCC act through the national assembly in a way that compels federal and state MDAs to send their monthly revenue and expenditure to the commission. That way, the commission can audit them every month and ask them to come to their office for clarification if they think they looted money.

Don't wait for four years to charge people to court. If governors know that their finance commissioners have to send monthly financial reports to the EFCC, they will be careful with how they spend money. The EFCC should also have a project monitoring or investigation unit. This will significantly reduce corruption in Nigeria - that is, if the EFCC is serious about fighting corruption. It's annoying that we don't even treat corruption like it's a problem in Nigeria.

@tommy589
I am tagging you to the comment I made in the past about reforming the EFCC.

Same EFCC that was highly efficient during Obasanjo time wherein a seating IGP was placed on cuffs? After Nuhu Ribadu tenure, EFCC became a charade. Meanwhile, why can't the NASS repeal the body from the executive grip in orders to make it an efficient and strong non-partisan state antigraft institution?
