My problem started when my timing belt got worn out(some of the teeth got removed). It happened as I was about entering my gate and I heard the engine noise got slower, I opened the hood to check maybe the fan belt is off but it was intact. Then I drove inside and turn off the engine, I tried starting but it refuse even though the crank is turning. I called a mechanic who confirm it is the timing belt. We replace the belt and start the car, but the engine begin to vibrate. The mechanic said some valves are bent. The mechanic opened the top cylinders and replace the bent valves, but intact from then the car became from bad to worst. From then the car became undrivable, I had to tow the car to Zuba(a town close to the federal capital Abuja). The mechanics at zuba made me change the passenger's side top cylinder, the oil pump, gaskets, and fan. The car started properly, but on a test drive after 40km the engine stop and won't start again. We discovered the timing belt has cut off, and the mechanic replaced the valves, grind them, and put another timing belt. The car became drivable but the engine is vibrating just like the first time we replace the belt. I drove the car for a week before the engine stopped on motion again. Please what do I do? Should I replace the engine? Or can you refer me to a mechanic in Abuja? Cos I live close to Abuja. And How much will the engine cost? (an idea please) I am desperate.

Volkswagen Passat B5,5 2,8 V6, 2 x DOHC 30V, 193 bhp.

Valves bent, due to timing belt failure.

Sorry to hear about your issues with your car. And no, you don't need an engine.

Just a few questions, before we go any further.

a) When the bent valves were replaced, were the head gaskets replaced? The cylinder heads would have been removed to replace the valves.
b) Were the hydraulic tappets that operate the bent valves replaced?
c) Were the belt tensioner and idler pulley replaced?
d) Was the hydraulic tensioner replaced?
e) Was the water pump replaced?
f) Crucial for the less experienced mechanic - did the last mechanic use a locking bar, to set the timing, before replacing the belt?
g) Were the replacement valves (on both ocassions) new, or used?

I appreciate you probably wouldn't know the answers to the above, but your mechanics should be able to show you invoices for all parts they claim to have fitted, as well as have the old parts. The fan didn't need replacing either.

You say the first belt lost some teeth. The most common culprit here is a seized, or partially seized water pump. It is internal, and driven by the timing belt. It's a false economy to replace the timing belt, without fitting a new water pump at the same time. To fit a new water pump, the belt would have to come off anyway.

The vibration after the first mechanic fitted a new belt and valves, tells me the timing was way out. This will cause rough running, misfires and at higher rpm, the pistons will strike the valves.

The second mechanic fell into the same pit dug by the first. Even worse, as when he discovered the belt had snapped so soon after replacement, he failed to condemn the main culprit - the water pump. The timing again was out, and you've most likely got bent valves again.

Please get back to me when you get a spare minute.

@siena, this is one of the most informative threads i've come across on NL; keep up the good job. I intend to purchase a 2008 Volkswagen passat, am i making a good choice as per engine reliability? and what other 'Audi' options do i have in the same class? What engine type would you recommend with fuel economy in mind?
Regards

The Volkswagen Passat you're looking at ran from 2005 - 2010. Available in a wide assortment of petrol and diesel engines, though given Nigeria's diesel prices, I'll stick with the petrol versions. Engine options were:

1,4 TSI I4 DOHC 16V - 120 bhp. 42 MPG.
1,6 FSI I4 DOHC 16V - 113 bhp. 35 MPG.
1,8 TSI I4 DOHC 16V - 157 bhp. 38 MPG.

2,0 FSI I4 DOHC 16V - 147 bhp. 32 MPG.
2,0 T FSI I4 DOHC 16V - 197 bhp. 33 MPG.
3,2 FSI V6 DOHC 24V - 246 bhp. 28 MPG.

All the engines are great, the 3,2 V6 is the flagship, the most powerful, but then it's got the worst fuel consumption figures. Then the less powerful, but sportier to drive is the turbocharged 2,0 T FSI. Reasonable fuel consumption, given the power output, and tuning potential. The drawback is Nigerian mechanics. Unless you've got a good mechanic, or are prepared to pay top dollar for maintenance, the turbo may be an issue.

My choice?

2008 Volkswagen Passat 2,0 FSI 6-speed automatic. Same basic design as the 2,0 T FSI, without the turbocharger. The engine is robust, and will cover well over 350,000 miles without any major repairs required. Good quality oil, regular servicing, including fluid change in the auto tranny and you'll be fine. A more grown-up, practical alternative to the mechanically similar Volkswagen Golf 2,0 FSI.

Equivalent Audi at a similar price?

2007 Audi A4 2,0 7-speed Multitronic. 2,0 I4 DOHC 20V, 130 bhp. Higher residual values than the equivalent Volkswagen Passat, higher quality interior trim, better sound proofing and cabin insulation. Any workshop clued up on Volkswagen will be in familiar territory with the Audi.

@siena thanks for your reply, there seem to be different trims using the passat engine you specified http://www.edmunds.com/volkswagen/passat/2008/?sub=sedan
which of the trims were u referring to? and as regards the audi, 2.0T or 2.0T quattro(in case of bad roads)?

By trim, I'm referring to the interior - seats, door cards, dash inserts (wood, carbon fibre etc).

The Audi does indeed come with quattro AWD option. My only concern is Nigerian mechanics and turbocharged engines. I chose the 2,0 FSI non-turbo because the engine's simpler in terms of maintenance. Unfortunately the 2,0 FSI isn't available with quattro. Quattro models are 1,8T FSI, 2,0T FSI and the 3,2 V6.

@Siena, my network develop a slight problem that was why I was out. But now am back. In relation to your questions, below is the answers I know.
a) Head gaskets were replaced
b) not sure I know it, but sure the mechanic did not change it.
c) they were not changed
d) not replaced
e) not replaced
f) not even sure if the mechanic knows what it is.
g) the valves on both occasion were used one's (tokumbo) grade one, according to the part sellers

Please what else do you want to know? Or what do I do?

g) the valves on both occasion were used one's (tokumbo) grade one, according to the part sellers

Please what else do you want to know? Or what do I do?

a) Well, either way, both cylinder heads will have to come off again. One important set of items that MUST be changed, each time the heads come off, and I'm sure were re-used. The cylinder head bolts. They are one-use only. Once they have been torqued to the required settings, they can't be reused. They are stretch bolts, once they have been used, they increase in length. If they are subsequently reused, they will bottom out in their bores, and not clamp the heads down properly. So a new set is required.
b) Any hydraulic tappets that have operated bent valves MUST be replace, as they may be shock-impact damaged. Never take chances with them.

c) Belt tensioner and idler pulley MUST be replaced. No rotating assemblies should be retained when a replacement belt is fitted.

d) The hydraulic tensioner MAY be reused, though a new one is strongly recommended.

e) The water pump is the main culprit here. The pulley either gets loose due to worn bearing, and it will throw a new belt off in no time. The same applies to the bearing seizing. It will shred a new belt, tearing the teeth off in a very short time. I feel this may have been the cause of all your timing belt issues.

f) The locking bar is a tool, used to lock both camshafts at TDC (Top Dead Centre) before a new belt is fitted. There is also a special bolt to lock the crankshaft in the correct position too (TDC). There is a blanking bolt on the engine block - rear lower on drivers side. This is removed, then the special bolt / locking pin is screwed in place, to lock the crank at TDC. This ensures the crank and both cams do not move when the new belt is being installed. I personally do not always use this timing kit, but it's advisable for a mechanic that is not well versed in the repair of the Audi / VW V6.

g) Valves!! I'm shocked to learn the mechanic fitted used valves. I've never heard of that in all my years working on engines.

You need to make a decision. Either go back to one of your mechanics, and let them have another bash at getting your engine right. Or better, take your time, ask found for a decent Audi / Volkswagen tech, that knows their onions. Then let them pull both heads, replace the bent valves with NEW items, as well as all the items I've listed.

Please keep us posted.

Thanks once more, I will take my time to find another mechanic, cos even if i give them the right ingredients they will not cook my meal to my satisfaction. The problem I am facing is how to get genuin VW parts in Nigeria, please can you link me to any seller? Or better more, link me to any site abroad that I can import the parts. And do you know any VW good mechanic around Abuja?

@Siena I want u to please prepare a pro forma invoice for me, the invoice will include all you think I will be needing.
The water pump, gaskets, tappets, valves, cylinder head bolts, and all other things you think I require. The other thing I want to ask is the cost of importing a fairly used engine, incase if the cost of the items will equal the cost or the engine.
Please note that my AC compressor and Alternator are in good condition. So the fairly used engine will not include those items. You can send the invoice to my email,(zakaliyu75@yahoo.com) thanks a lot.

Diagram 3) Coil pack (COP) #1.
Diagram 4) Mass Air-Flow Meter (MAF) #6. Replacement must be genuine Audi or BOSCH.

Very many thanks Mr Siena, plz let's arrange for the parts I'll need as i'm not sure of getting genuine parts in Abuja. Been to Audi Place and was asked to register the car with N250,000 (~£1000) before they can even answer my greetings.

I believe If I have the parts, drawings (or service/maintenance) manual I'll sort things out myself, I'm a marine engineer.
Will be awaiting you response on mail.
Thanks and God bless.

Baba Siena,
I have sent you a mail about how I can get the Audi A6 2001 model owners manual from you. Also I will like to know how to scan my car, I was told I could buy the cable off ebay and install the software on my laptop and use it to scan my audi. Is that true ? and can you also help me get the cable? thanks. Awaiting your swift response.
Re: The Audi And Volkswagen Issues Resolution Thread by Nobody: 10:49am On Dec 04, 2011
^^^ Yes, you can buy the VAGCOM cable off eBay, and install the software on your laptop. Just be aware, this is a free version, the cable is a Chinese copy, so the diagnostic and programming capabilities will be limited. It will however be fine for normal, domestic use.

I didn't receive you email - please resend.

Hello Siena,
Price quotes in Naira? Can u supply witting Nija?
My transmission has gone to a very bad state, now it goes 'limp' (PRNDS Illuminates) with a large jerk each time I move to 'R' and gear shift is comparatively harder to move.
Should I renew all 6 coils at once?
I cudnt download the service manual from the link you sent - asked for a PayPal a/c.
Please check as I have replied you mail.
Many thanks once again and God Bless.

The Bentley link would definitely involve Paypal, there's no way round it, unfortunately.

The quotes are all in Naira. I can ship to anywhere within Nigeria. As for replacing all 6 coils, you can do so, obviously cost is an issue. I can give a reduction though, if you wish to purchase 6.

Good day Siena, Hope you can help here 'cos I've just about had it.

1) VW
2) Passat
3) 2.8L V6
4) Auto (tiptronic)
5) 2001
6) US
7) Front wheel

PROBLEMS (and not limited to the below)

a) At times, (25) you feel that the gear is not changing as it should. All of PRND432 illuminated.
b) Most times, drives ok, but still all of PRND432 illuminated.
c) All the time, a heavy/serious THUD is heard and felt when moving from stand still (especially at stop lights/ hold ups) and also on downshifts. Gear oil has been changed, brake solenoid () changed, brake switch etc. Need to mention here that in attempts to fix this, gear/engine sitting has been worked on, gear brain box opened and other things the mechanic may not have the liver to tell me 'cos I raised hell of the repeated promises and same issue re-occurrences.
d) Recently, Air bag fault pops up on info screen, even after scan check and wipe. Air bag never deployed before.
e) (41) Feels like only left side of brake pads engaged. I have changed all 4 pads a few times
f) After 2 hrs of rugged driving, brake pedal feels flat on ground, even though brake fluid is at full. No Break fluid leaks at all.
g) Check engine light always pops back on (and stays on) less than an hour after oil change.
h) Right back door lock does not work with central lock (windows work ok).
i) Right side mirror does not auto-fold with control switch.
j) Recently, a small fuse for the AC, horn and all the steering controls keeps burning out, with or without the AC on.
k) Dash display is not steady, contrast changes on its own with some pixels/bits dark on not there at all.
l) Water leaking into car (not from sun roof), floor carpets wet.
All issues have been attempted to fix at least twice with separate mechanics

Car handling and control is superb when all ok, but that's becoming far in between.
What do you think?

rgds

Volkswagen Passat 4,0 W8, 250 bhp.

Aircon high pressure line erruption.

When you say "blow out", do you mean the pipe under the right front bumper began to leak, or it actually errupted audibly? That corner also houses the receiver drier, and is the most common area of leaks. The small O-ring seal on top of the receiver drier can perish, and cause loss of gas. The other area in that same corner is the lower pipe-to-condenser seal / join.

a) Check the pipe-to-condenser, this is a particularly leak-prone area. It is also common for the union to seize, and when trying to undo the large nut (aluminium) it is all too easy to twist the end of the condenser. This can weaken it, to the point it later bursts.

b) Check the receiver drier (cannister) top pipe seal. Note, all seals / O-rings used in aircon joints MUST be green or lilac. These are specific to any system that runs R123-A. The gas molecules are so tiny, the use of the more common black O-rings is not adviced, as they will not hold the gas for long.

Any leaks will most likely leave a yellow-green oily residue - providing PAG oil and the yellow dye was added when last the system was charged. I'm willing to bet your leak is in one of the two areas I've mentioned. Either the old O-rings were re-used, or the wrong (black) ones were used.

Please check the above, and get back to me. For reference, I'm attaching a diagram of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat 4,0 W8 aircon system, including pipework, receiver drier, condenser and compressor. Components are as follows:

Receiver drier: #22.
Condenser: #3.
Compressor: Above #26.
Pipe-to-condenser seal: #58.
Pipe-to-receiver drier seal: #55.
Pipes-to-compressor seals: 15 & 15a.

Check all the seal areas for leaks. When your compressor, condenser, pressure switch etc were replaced back in '09, what was actually wrong with your air con system? It just seems a lot to replace in one hit, to resolve...?
