Poet, dramatist, critic, essayist, and media columnist, Niyi Osundare on Monday said that corruption is the fastest growing industry in Nigeria.
The erudite scholar disclosed this while delivering a lecture organised by the Save Nigeria Group titled: Why we no longer blush in Lagos.
“If Nigeria does not kill corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria,” Mr Osundare said.

“Why is it that Nigerians no longer blush? How did we come to lose our sense of shame after losing our sense of propriety and proportion? How did we come to develop a skin that is so thick that no arrows of degradation, no needles of dehumanisation are ever sharp and violent enough to penetrate our body and rouse our senses? How did our nerves slide into their present state of stupor? How did we plunge into this state of dysconsciousness?”

He blamed Nigerian leaders for the problems of the country saying that “there infinitely bigger thieves among Nigeria’s public functionaries today walking freely and calling the shots because their own lid has never been blown.”

The Chairman of the event and constitutional lawyer, Itse Sagay, said that “Nigeria is in a situation where we have to find a policeman to police the police”.

Mr Sagay added it was vital for Nigerians to negotiate on whether there was any hope for the country amid the increasing challenges.

The LOOTITUDES

(1) And seeing the multitudes, Corruption went up into Aso Rock; and when he was set, the politicians came unto him;

(2) And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying:

(3) Blessed are the clueless in wisdom; for theirs is the Presidency of the nation.

(4) Blessed are they that rig elections, for they shall be elected.

(5) Blessed are the thieves; for they shall inherit the National Assembly.

(6) Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after public funds; for their accounts shall be filled.

(7) Blessed are the bribe-takers, for they shall obtain big bribes.

(cool Blessed are the Petroleum Ministers, for they shall loot trillions.

(9) Blessed are the bootlickers, for they shall be called the Federal Executhief Council.

(10) Blessed are they which are prosecuted for corruption’s sake; for theirs is the kingdom of wealth.

(11) Blessed are ye, when EFCC shall invite you, and interrogate you, and bring all manner of charges against you, for my sake.

(12) Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad; for fat are your accounts in Swiss banks; for so they prosecuted the politicians which were before you.

(13) Ye are the thieves of the nation; but if the thief has lost his craftiness, wherewith shall he be looting? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be charged to court, and be sentenced to prison.

(14) Ye are the liars of the nation, a lie that is carefully thought-out cannot be found out.

(15) Neither do politicians cook a big lie, and serve it to SaharaReporters, but to NTA; and it gives false hope unto all that watch the 9pm news.

(16) Let your gowns so flow before men, that they may see your big loots, and glorify your father which is in Ota.

(17) Think not that I am come to arrest the fuel marketers.

(18) For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one Naira or one Kobo shall not be left in the Federation Account, but all be looted away.

(19) Whosoever shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the Asiwaju in the kingdom of corruption; but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called BOT Chairman in the kingdom of corruption.

(20) For I say unto you, except your corruption shall exceeds the corruption of policemen and lawmakers, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of immunity.

(21) Ye have heard that it was said by them of the old time, thou shall not loot; and whosoever shall loot shall be in danger of the judgment:

(22) But I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his party without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say, stop looting, shall be in danger of penury, the elder brother of poverty.

(23) Therefore if thou bring thy loot to the UK, and there rememberest that the EFCC has case against thee

(24) Leave thy loot in a UK bank and go to Dubai; first be reconciled to the EFCC Chairman and come and enjoy thy loot.

(25) Bribe thy prosecutors quickly while thou art in the way with him; lest at any time he deliver thee to the judge, and the judge sentence thee, and thou be cast into prison.

(26) Verily I say unto you, thou shall by no means come out thence, till thou hast entered a plea bargain.

Corruption is endemic in Nigeria.Agreed. But how do we resolve it. That is where we all have divergent views. For me, I believe that we need to build our institutions to overcome our corrupt instincts. we need to reduce and close up windows for corruption. We need to impose strict measures and go electronic on our govt procurement processes. That is why I salute the present efforts of govt to integrate online payment systems. That is why I also support the withdrawal of subsidy which has come to be the major source of corruption in Nigeria. That is why I support the New PIB, a Legislation which will herald a measure of accountability and transparency in the oil industry. That is why I subscribe to the full privatization of PHCN. That is why I support full deregulation. That is why I support contributory pension scheme. That is why I support bio metric capturing of data. That is why I support the present efforts to merge some MDA's. We really need to grow our institutions for this fight.

The thought process of many(not a majority) nigerians on the lower rung of the ladder will give you an insight on why the leaders are also corrupt..WE all are a part of nigeria's mess..we turn a blind eye on any situation which doesn't concern us or our family..

We are near solution when we accept that we are the problem and there's nothing like government cos they were once the people. Then we can start the solutions to that by changing our mindset that only the leaders can influence the system. Until we realise that the corrupt system is made up of you & me, we won't be able to solve anything. Until we realise that 'you and me' are the corrupt ones, we are not near solution. I have also contributed my part by sharing my view. Thanks.

[size=15pt]The thing that gets me about all these sort of threads is that it just gives people opportunity to AIR THEIR HYPOCRISY and little else.

Give any of you loudmouths the position of oil minister or state governor now, and see how your holier than thou attitude will change overnight. Next thing we'll hear, YOU are driving big cars and owning property all over the place.

ABEG MAKE WE HEAR SOMETHING OJARE.

Even Osundare himself, Give him one top position now and see how he will CHOP AND CLEAN MOUTH.

All this blaming ''our leaders'' is mere moral masturb.ation. Did they not come from us? I have a friend who always used to moan about corruption. They made his brother chairman of one parastatal recently. Now the bobo just dey chase contract up and down. When you call him now he doesn't even pick. NONSENSE. ABEG JOOR!!
