Experience is the best teacher and I totally agree, but a wise man once told me that you don't have to wait until you can learn from YOUR own experience. It's too costly... he says. Learning from other people's experience is the cheapest, less harmful and most generous way to learn. For starters, let me make it absolutely clear that you can not protect an idea, oh please don't fool yourself alright? There is no point trying to hide an idea, it flies around freely looking for the best mind that is willing to accept it and express it. If it comes to you, it is because you were found worthy, so don't lazy around looking for your laptop charger. Find a way to let it out, and make sure to take all the credit. Which brings us to why I'm writing this piece.
When someone says "send in your synopsis, we will choose the best 5 and contact them", I know the Nollywood and whole Nigeria entertainment industry too well and chances are that the person on the other side of that circular is a lazy rogue writer who is only out to get the best story ideas and walk. Do not fall for it! Some even go as far as telling you "Not less than 1000 words"... like seriously? Your synopsis is your idea in summary and you are about to give it away in too many details! Although Nigerian copyright law does not need you to register anywhere, but and I quote... "as soon as an original work is reduced to fixed and tangible form, it is automatically copyrightable" says the law. What does that even mean guys? Anyway, here are a few simple steps on how you can protect your screenplay;
i. Do not submit a synopsis to just anyone!! And if Africa Magic requests for it? Well, send them a 250 words two-paragraphed synopsis.
ii. Use the updated version of Microsoft Word to create your Nollywood play. In that way, it is always possible to check and find the original author and date of creation of that material if you ever need it in court or in any form of arbitration.
iii. Any material you are sending out, always indicate that you are the original owner by using the copyright format below your text. You have seen something like this before "(C) All rights reserved". I will show you how it's done in MS Words.

HOW MUCH SHOULD EXTRAS BE PAID IN NOLLYWOOD

Guys, this is a money talk so I don't want to feed you with plenty of stories. I will give a brief
background then reel out some numbers so we can talk. First, I feel insulted when you call me an "Extra" like some mere shadow you brought to complete your numbers? When will they realize that those "Extra" are the reason your lead isn't looking stupid yet? ( anyway, I will talk about this on a later date). In Nollywood where unprofessionalism is enthroned above anything else, you would expect the learned big figures to know and do better... but that rarely happens! You want to produce a low budget movie with over 50 extras? You want to eat your cake and have it? A piece of quick advice to all Nollywood producers out there; If your extras are happy on your set during production, they will be your first customers, biggest and widest hypemen and marketers. Always remember this.
Now let's look at some numbers:
It cost roughly N35,000 (Almost $100) to purchase an AGN form today. One would expect that same body to regulate activities of these notorious producers who pay Extras between N0 to N3,000 ($0 to $ for an entire days job! Not to compare Hollywood with our dear industry, but hey, an extra earns minimum $8 every hour he's on set for the lowest budget movies, and as high as $30 for normal budget movies. I will give credit to some Nollywood filmmakers who have tried to increase that pay to N5,000 per day ($14) recently but I also want to let them know that I have received many reports about how their Production Managers and 3rd party talent agents rip off our struggling actors and eventually return them back to N3,000 or N2,500 per day and sometimes nothing at all!
Some of us are fully aware of the intrigues of the Nigerian entertainment industry. So we need your opinion on what should be an IDEAL WAGE FOR A BACKGROUND ACTOR in Nollywood. Drop your opinions in the comment box let's make it trend.

well, for something acceptable, you need good sound, light and relatively good camera. For a 1hr 18mins, that's almost 80pages of screen play which will take about 5days to shoot maximum. You can rent a Lumix or Mac 4 cam for 5k per day, zoom H6, 2 kino Flo and 2 led all for 8k per day. Generator too. So say 80 to 90k for equipments but if u have to pay people to use it then u will negotiate and pay more. Roughly, for equipments and their handlers, keep 150k. But that is basically what you need. If you want to cut cost, adjust the script to have less interior scenes.
