Following my admittance into nairaland and discovery that it was owned by OLUWAseun Osewa, I reasonably assumed he was a theist. It wasn't long before I realised he is in fact an atheist. Methinks names help in no small way to put one's beliefs in perspective especially as Africans. Seun, kindly consider a name change or at least delete the 'Oluwa' in your name to halt the misrepresentation. |

PAGAN 9JA:Oluwa means Lord, and it is the most popular prefix attached to names of Yoruba Christians. |
Re: Seun Should Consider Name Change by PastorAIO: 2:17pm On Aug 03, 2012 |
That would depend on whether Seun has a lord or not. His Lord does not have to be a deity. It could be money. In which case his name is thanking his lord, money, for all the blessings it has given him. His lord could be his local king or traditional ruler. Olu is not necessarily a deity. |

Pastor AIO: That would depend on whether Seun has a lord or not. His Lord does not have to be a deity. It could be money. In which case his name is thanking his lord, money, for all the blessings it has given him. Those are far-fetched assumptions. Oluwa as a prefix for names already has a stereotype. His Christian parents certainly did not have Money in mind when he was named. Otherwise, they would have more appropriately named him Owoseun. |

bamto: Check the various definitions of god according to Encarta dictionary: god [god] noun (plural gods) 1. supernatural being: one of a group of supernatural male beings in some religions, each of which is worshiped as the personification or controller of some aspect of the universe Thor, the Norse god of thunder 2. figure or image: a representation of a god, used as an object of worship the little bronze god standing in a niche above the altar 3. something that dominates: something that is so important that it takes over somebody's life (informal) worshiping the false god of fame 4. somebody admired: a man who is widely admired or imitated (informal) He was one of the rock music gods of the early Seventies. In summary, the Oluwa doesn't have to be your god so get over it |

PAGAN 9JA: Oluwa is a christian prefix meaning God, and the op is right to wonder about the topic. Why should someone who is radically anti-christian bear a christian name? 1 Like |

Oluwa means our god. The yoruba's have been using that word before the christian missionaries set foot on African soil, so why do you think it is exclusively meant for your Christian god and not one of the other gods or diety? |
Re: Seun Should Consider Name Change by wirinet(m): 11:07am On Aug 04, 2012 |
Olu does not mean god, it means king, lord, ruler, etc. Otherwise Olu of Warri would mean god of warri, the Christian god is refered to as king or lord of heaven - OLU-ORUN, in yoruba. |

Now, even the yorubas distinguish between God and god, Lord and lord. The deities are gods, husbands and masters are lord, but no yoruba will refer to anyone other than their Almighty Creator as God or Lord. Note the distictions and don't get it twisted. |

wirinet: Olu does not mean god, it means king, lord, ruler, etc. Otherwise Olu of Warri would mean god of warri, the Christian god is refered to as king or lord of heaven - OLU-ORUN, in yoruba. There is no text without a context. Etymology of words in Warri and Yoruba are not the same so your examples don't pan. Seun was born into a Christian Yoruba family, where Oluwa is deemed to be the Almighty Lord. |
