You are right, that is why you 've got to change to gear 1, following that, the vehicle will kind of start jerking that will reduce the speed drastically, Meanwhile, also take note of vehicle behind.

question: This topic is a reactive one. But what is required is a proactive measure.
Be proactive and not reactive. 1. don't wait for the brake to fail. Periodic maintenance is important. 2. don't drive at top speed. So if the brake fails or the tire bursts, damage or injury will not be low or minimal. 3. For manual gear, gradually switch from top to low gear, then to neutral. then hand brake. 4. For Auto gear, switch to neutral and gradually apply the hand brake.
I do not know what can be done if you are driving large/heavy duty vehicle such as trailer.
For manual,changing to neutral gear is not advisable.As neutral makes the car to be more free,no more grip on the car and you can loose control of the car expecially when on high speed and going down a steepy road.Never never change to neutral. The best thing to do is to change to gear 1 and remove ur leg gently from the clutch until you completely free your ur leg from it.This will defintely slow down the car and you can then apply handbrake to bring the car to a complete halt.

This is a normal noise... it should be a squiling noice .... This particular noise sounding even after a long drive and you'll be embarrassed like you're trying to stop a tractor.... the noise is not pleasant so you should be fine.

It is corrosion on the surface of your disc brakes or drums that clears up after you apply the brakes a few times. It is caused by water and/or moist air. Perfectly normal.

When you are driving and the brake fails, it's no longer safe for you to continue sitting inside the vehicle, just open the window and jump out of the car, it is better to be alive with broken arms and legs to tell the story than for one to tell your story after you must have gone.
@Och77, a car gear does not enter reverse gear when on high speed, it makes some mechanical noise instead. The best thing to do when your brakes fail on high speed in the case of manual gear is to shift gear to a high gear '1' and after much retardation you apply the park brake. In auto, all you need to do is to gradually apply the park brake. Never attempt to shift gear to 'P' as this will suddenly hook up the engine and can cause the car to skid and can also cause serious damage to your car's gearbox.

Wrong move, this shows you are not a driver. when your break fail suddenly:- 1. Be composed and don't panic. 2. Put on your hazard lights and headlights, if you can press your horn repeatedly to alert other road users. 3. For manual, change your gears repeatedly from 1-2-3-4 without pressing the accelerator. Repeat the process while manuvering the car. 4. if you must hit anything, ensure its not something that can cause injury to any person and at minimum cost. 5. Do not attempt to switch off your engine during this episode. 6. Pray in your mind.
