@Marchman
The Minister actually wrote this> He is indeed very intelligent. He made a first class/distinction at Sussex University in Development Studies.
He is a winner of the Chevening Scholarship. A great mind.Check him out!

Good for him if he is a great mind. But what I expect from great minds in situations like his is simple. Lay out a step by step plan of action with time limits, execution dates and expected outcomes for every event we plan to compete for in the Olympics based on our strengths/competitive advantage. Forward same to the FG for funding or solicit same from interested multinationals, telcos, banks, corporate organisations and even high net worth individuals. This should have been done well in advance of the Olympics itself. If the funding or the level of engagement received does not reflect what would yeild great results in terms of preparations worthy of a country's participation in an event like that of the Olympics, then I would have expected a great mind to have tendered his resignation prior to the start of the Games giving clear reasons why he can't put up with the '' same old, same old fire brigade'' approach to doing things in Nigeria, period!!

As for me, I am dead sick of all these excuses we love giving when we fail to do things right.

this is where you are dead wrong!!!

the olympics is not yet over...the dude is just trying to let everyone including uncle jona why this group was a failure!!!
i do not expect a detailed plan now..
what i expect is, after the olympics ...use a couple of months to draw out a well detailed (seems like he can do this)plan with specific goals and dates and most importantly!!! hope he gets the right funding!!!

sports is money ...and if any of you expect miracles without money, you are joking...

we need to catch these talented ones when they are still kids....between the ages of 6-10.....
take them on a journey of intense training for years...YOU WOULD BE AMAZED THAT MOST OF THESE SUPERSTAR'S SWEEPING THE MEDALS WERE SPOTTED BETWEEN THOSE PRIME AGES....
DO not go to the sports festivals oooo..all you have there are overgrown old hags and old cargoes..catch them young

Re: London-2012: Task Ahead Is Clear - Minister Of Sports by Demoladoc: 5:36am On Aug 10, 2012
WHY SHOULD HE RESIGN??

He was only appointed TWO MONTHS!!!! to the olympics so what miracle could he have done in just 2mths?

Most nairalanders are devoid of understanding and soundmind. you just like to comment on issues without applying your mind to the koko of the matter.

What the minister has done here is to say we have done poorly and to set out on planning ahead.
Now if that will translate to action remains to be seen

but for now WELLDONE MR MINISTER.

A true nigerian shouldn't be expecting any good outcome from sport at this point in time.

Re: London-2012: Task Ahead Is Clear - Minister Of Sports by mbhs139(m): 7:46am On Aug 10, 2012
We had arrived London riding on the wave of a short but intensive training
Olympic medal are not won on short training, it takes years of preparation to win medals.

we have had one of our best preparations coming into this competition in recent years
that couldn't have been true. best preparation and yet no medal? what about '92 and '96

We shall therefore not attempt any excuses or indulge in any unproductive blame game.
Rather than see this as a failure
what else or how else will you see it if not failure. I think the most honourable thing to do for this man is to resign. but that's not in our culture.
Re: London-2012: Task Ahead Is Clear - Minister Of Sports by Pukkah: 7:55am On Aug 10, 2012
Every medal is clearly projected and carefully planned for both in financial and technical terms over a sustained period of time. Only years of intensive, unrelenting training and preparation can win medals. There is no short cut. Medals are won by people who have worked hardest not by those who have prayed hard

True. Somehow, religion has taught Nigerians to be lazy and complacent.

Re: London-2012: Task Ahead Is Clear - Minister Of Sports by mbulela: 9:42am On Aug 10, 2012
mallam Bolaji Abdullahi speaks way too much grammar for my liking.
The same grammar he spoke during the ABSU rape case, he spoke during the NYSC issue is the same grammar he is speaking in the sports ministry.
I think he should return to journalism. His grammar is too much for my liking. we need action.

How does that address the issues at stake?
His intelligence has never been in doubt. His ability is the matter at stake. He is fond of speaking plenty grammar and delivering little.

Incisive and factual analysis of where we are and the way forward. However, I only hope it's not another political speech. For all we know, the speech may have been filed away with the other speeches the Minister made in the past. One nagging question though; where is the funding for the development of the Minister's ideas going to come from?
And just another thought, is it cheaper to send athletes round the world to train for the Olympics or to invest in the training facilities in 9ja? I think the latter will benefit other budding talents as well as the 'prospective Olympians'.
Re: London-2012: Task Ahead Is Clear - Minister Of Sports by oladayo042: 12:36pm On Aug 10, 2012
DARA1234: Sports is a science, you need to be trained in the physiology and physics.
Nutrition, appropriate muscle development etc. You need a proper sports program as the minister said, we need sports physiotheapists, sports doctors, nutritionists etc.We need to start now, in the UK and America, the schools and Universities have well equipped sport complexes and that is where talents are developed.
I agree 100% with you. I once heard of a Japan University of Sport Science and I'm like wow!

this is where you are dead wrong!!! the olympics is not yet over...
Oh really?? I bet the remaining few days will see Nigerian athletes ''conquer'' the Games with medals abi?? grin For your information sir, the closing ceremony holds on Sunday August 12 2012 and the last time I checked today is the 11th of August 2012. cheesy

the dude is just trying to let everyone including uncle jona why this group was a failure!!!
- Well, this group is a FAILURE because the LEADERS (within the Sports Ministry and beyond) have FAILED!! The athletes will NOT go to the Games and perform magic, you can't give what you don't have.

i do not expect a detailed plan now..
- If you understood clearly what I said in my write up, I am sure you wouldn't have made this statement. I was responding to a poster's contribution and detailing what I would have expected him to do having assumed the position of Sports Minister especially as it concerned preparations for the Olympic Games. All the plans, preparations and engagement I mentioned earlier ought to have been made well in ADVANCE of the Games itself and NOT ''now'' as you stated in your post.

what i expect is, after the olympics ...use a couple of months to draw out a well detailed (seems like he can do this)plan with specific goals and dates and most importantly!!! hope he gets the right funding!!!
- Here we share the opinion (as I believe well meaning Nigerians do too) that we NEED to prepare well for competitions and that preparing well amongst other things mean committing enough time, effort and money to achieve GREAT results. I am sick of mediocre performances and the ''wish me luck'' syndrome!! Where we differ ofcourse is when it ought to have been done and I maintain that preparations should have been WELL IN ADVANCE OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES.

sports is money ...and if any of you expect miracles without money, you are joking...
- I am well aware of this and I made mention of funding from different sources in that write up. Many things if not everything worth doing cost money and I mean REAL money and sports is NOT an exception.

But seriously, I am still wondering where I got it ''dead wrong''

I wasn't even calling for the sports ministers head b4...but after reading this s.h.it I think this man actually needs to resign..." We didn't go the olympics with the intention of winning"...Are u super fu.c.king kiddin me....So we went there to carry last abi....This shows the behaviour of anoda eye service political a.s.s whipe... Shebi they carry political delegates to the olympics nw...Wasting our resources...I'm tired of this country sef.
Re: London-2012: Task Ahead Is Clear - Minister Of Sports by ayusco: 8:33am On Aug 11, 2012
Nice speech like evryone has said hope its not just anoda round of rhetoric. As per him resigning I think we shld giv him benefit of the doubt since he was just made substansive sport minister 2 months ago. Our failure started way b4 he came on the scene but if he too shows similar ineptitude I will be d first to call for his sack. The truth again is that govt has over the past few years not veiwed sports as an essential part of nation building hence the frequent appointment of political jobbers as sports ministers. The point the minister made abt having the economic acumen was not made in isolation as he did say that its one thing to hav the resources but another to invest wisely. Sport nowadays is mostly corporate driven and nigeria shld be no different. Not your occasional sponsoring of sport clinics or competitions but long term partnership. In the same vein govt shld as a matter of urgency weed out all the sport associations of civil service mentality and allow/encourage proactive and brilliant people to head populate such associations. Once this happens corporate nigeria would naturally identify with such people. Govt shld also sell of sporting facilities to individuals who can manage them and ensure they are in proper shape. In the short term govt shld identify a few talented athletes eg okagbare, weightlifters, wrestlers chukwumerije? etc and give them elite athlete funding in partnership with the private sector to cover training competitions/tours coaches etc to get them to that top level ready for rio2016. In the long termschool sports shld b the backbone for nurturing and selecting top talent which can b recommended for elite funding. With political will it can surely b done. For all of us constructive critisism is good but let us go a step further by giving concrete steps to improving our sports no one is a monopoly of knowledge so let's all learn together
