Hello i work with a telecoms company as a material supply chain and later upgraded to Gsm mast site supervisor due to my knowledge as a specialist, i climb mast for supervision even though my company have no insurance for me.i have seen many dead either by falling or tower member fell on them "they are on their own" after little money. the price is ok at the beginning around 2001 to 2005 because it was operated and supervised by companies with insurance and then the construction of 60m masts tower range from 800k to 1.2k depending on the tower materials because some are light, heavy, many members etc,but now due to the current work situation in nigeria which resulted to downsizing. Telecoms companies have to manage cost by retrenching workers. for those retrenched to survived with NO insurance, they goes to the companies who is willing to pay less Inshort for installing a 60m now is at the range of 160k to 220k now depending on the materials so tell me what do u do with 160k with 5 rigers and labours for not less than 5days so here comes ur question HOPE THE PAY EQUALS THE RISK? CAPITAL NO WAY 1 Like |

sammily: I use to work for a telecom BTS site build firm and know a lot of riggers, I can tell U̶̲̥̅̊ that the riggers in my company take less than 100k per month. As for safety equipment, most of this guys don't use any even when the company provides for them. Sadly I am also of the̶̲̥̅̊ habit of climbing mast without safety equipment, though I was not a rigger, I sometimes need to climb to check the work done. That's right, the climbing isn't difficult for experts, infact before you say jack, they are up there. I won't advice non-expert to dare it. The first time i climbed to do microwave allignment because the contractor wasn't available was the last. The irony is, those that do the software part (seat with a laptop thing) earn more than installers (physical job). 1 Like |

That's one scary job,I will never accept such job not for a million naira. A guy once fell from a mast died on the spot in my presence and I lived with that trauma for days, like someone said earlier armed robbery stands a better chance. |

Yah! That a nice job, I have being on it for 5 years now both for survey path line of sight and antenna installation, I tell you it's rewarding. In Nigeria, the pay is not much same goes to contractors companies, but if you work for operator or vendor, the pay is great especially abroad. This job can earn your like $6k every month minimum of you work for operator or major vendor as basic pay with other allowance. Safety is the watch word, there is a saying " tie up or die" |

kamuzu: The pay is indeed good. The real issues to contend with on the job is most riggers are not safety conscious as they do not border about wearing body harness. This unfortunately has led to a few mishaps resulting to loss of life. any rigger who earns 35k on this job/month must be a trainee rigger and should not claim to be a rigger.I was opportuned/privileged to experienced rig work last yr during my sch IT. As for those guys, they hardly wear those required kits except they re working under the supervision of white men....especially wen working for mobile , shell , etc. As for the pay, since majority of them re just SSCE holders n thus, thier fixed monthly pay is just nothing more than 40k. BUh most of them make within the range of 350k _500k .....authoritatively; this is as a result of other legitimately "bush"affairs |

ayox2003: I do some of their RF Optimization for them, its just that here, you must be multy tasking, Naija dey enjoy as in single tasking, but am planning sticking to RF and Transmission planning only, body don dey reject that hardcore job.. |

Theses guys are worse off now. Price range from 40K for 12m tower to 120k for 55m in my company. This includes painting. These guys are simply exploited. These days no one cares if they are insured? The truth is MOST of them barely finished secondary school. Boy!!! you think you can lift one of the lower tower members (parts)? You are only dreaming. |

For me, riggers in naija are being paid base on d risk involvd. I wrkd for zenthbk IT dept for som yrs b4 i left 4 telecom coy. I can tel u guys dat i do pity my riggers cos of d pay and d way they dnt take safety as their ist priority. Anyway, d basic precautns are: if u ar allegic 2 height or breeze pls dnt near d job 4 any reasn. Also, avoid lookin dwn frequently while climbing. I doubt if there is any riggers in naija who earns upto 300k. May b dat ur boyfrnd is technician or trained engr. Even chevron doesnt pay upto 300k 4 dia rigger. I hv guys there |

Securetek: Does anyone know a company where one can get trainings one this kind of jobs? in my in my opinion its a noble job even with its safety hazards, come to think of it which job is safe these days...its only God that protects!! You can start working with Vendor as Line of sight survey(LOS), they will train you on the climbing part and from there you can upgrade yourself to Transmission Planner, RF Planner and Optimization, so you have both Field and office experience, God help you, you can get gob internationally cos that job is needed everywhere in the world and the supplies is seriously limited in number cos people are scared of height and climbing. Try vendors like Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei, ericsson and other vendors in Nigeria.. wish you all the best. By the way, i started with Alcatel-Lucent.... now in the U.S with the best Operator and Tower companies... That job is 100% secured, ask me why, No replcement readily available, a guy resign last august, we haven't got a replacement for him till now... |

honeycandy: My boyfriend does this kinda job. And he earns above 300k monthly. Do you think this amount is ok for this kinda job? I saw his pay slip one time. Even as a female, I won't mind the job shaa oo I guess your boyfriend works in those small telco coys (Radial Circle, PPC, etc) that provides services to oil and gas coys. Most riggers with the major GSM service providers and their respective vendors earn way less than that (about N50K/N60K). |
Re: Can You Do Mast Installation/Repair Job? ( Pic) by Och77(m): 9:43pm On Aug 15, 2012 |
The rigging job isn't as lucrative as it used to be between 1999-2003. Back then they were very few and high in demand. To climb a 120ft mast for restoration a link which could be just one time climbing,it costs btw 40-50k. And to set up a point to point link then costs 80-120k. It was worth the risk then. Companies could hardly afford them on permanent basis then. |

http:Man, what year was that? Again, i don't think he can have direct access to those Vendors you listed except he attached himself to a vendor's engineer unofficially. The easiet means to learn the practicals is for him to work without pay under any contractor or sub-contractor. For the theory and co. i think TTC is alright. |
Re: Can You Do Mast Installation/Repair Job? ( Pic) by http(m): 10:58pm On Aug 15, 2012 |
D-Explorer: I started with Alcatel-lucent in 2007, from then i have never look back, i really don't know how things work out in naija now cos i left in 2010, then as RF engineer. What am saying in essence is that if he can get thru as a Line of sight engineer direct to Vendors like Alcatel, Huawei and erricsson, thru learning of the trade, as a surveyor, you will do half of planning because its needed for your survey work, learn more and you become a good Transmission Planner, that is the Break.... I guess its all about determination and luck... then I was earning like 120K for a start. |

Rigging is fun but the pay does not commensurate with the risk. The job was highly rewarding back in 2003 - 2008. Back in the days when 2.4ghz and 5.8ghz are the in-thing, I used to do RF Optimization at N10k per climb back then. But now, mast climbing is more like a suicide mission. Nowadays, man must wack! You see riggers doing 60m for just N40k Hates - Screws dropping off - Realignments - Unexpected Rain - Scorching Sun Likes - Cool Breeze - City Views - Feeling like a super-human |

http:Ok bro, good to read from you. I joined Alcatel-Lucent early last year and i think you haven't miss the dev., much except that in 2010, you probably be working more on 2G projects, that has changed though. I will PM you, we talk from there. Cheers! |
