IGP Tasks Govs On Police Fund, Says nigeria Police Least Funded In The world by bola4dprec(m): 9:50am On Aug 24, 2012
The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar, has said that the 36 state governments of the federation and the local government areas, are yet to contribute to the special police fund approved by the Federal Executive Council and the National Council of States. The fund is to be managed by a committee set up by the federal government with the Vice President as its chairman with all tiers of government as contributors to the fund to ensure adequate funding of the force.. Abubakar who disclosed this in Minna yesterday
when he paid a visit to Niger State Governor, Dr Muazu Babangida Aliyu, and also commissioned 55 operation vehicles donated by the state
government, urged the northern governors to pay more attention to the security situation in the region. He noted with dissatisfaction that only the federal government has been contributing to the fund, saying that the postures of the state governments and the 774 local government areas in the country was an indication that if state police are allowed, they will not be properly funded. He said that the time was not yet ripe for state police adding that the problem with the present police structure was inadequate funding to enhance performance arguing that the Nigeria police was the least funded in the world. The IGP advised the Northern Governor’s Forum whose region, he said is more plagued by security problems to come up with something more concrete to tackle the problem, adding that the security problems in the Northern part of the country was a result of high level of poverty, unemployment and wide gap between the rich and the poor.
