A Port Harcourt Magistrate Court has sentenced a 40-year-old man, James Okosun, to six months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a Nokia phone valued at N2,500 and some other amount of money belonging to one Saqir Sabiu.

Also, the court ordered that the convict should be given 10 strokes of cane before he was taken to the prison.

Okosun was arraigned on August 16 on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

He was said to have committed the offence with one Ali, male (now at large), whose surname was unknown, on August 10, at 51 Freetown Street, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The charges read: “That you James Okosun (M) and one Ali (M) surname unknown now at large, on August 10, at 51 Freetown Street, Port Harcourt in the Magisterial District did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit: Stealing and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 516(A) of the criminal code laws of Rivers State of Nigeria 1999.

“That you James Okosun (M) on the same date and place in the aforementioned Magisterial District did steal one Nokia phone valued N2, 500 and some amount of money belonging to Saqir Sabiu (M) and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 390(9) of the criminal code, laws of Rivers State of Nigeria 1999.”

During the trial, the magistrate discharged Okosun on count one, which was conspiracy, but found him guilty on count two, stealing.

Delivering her judgement, Wanjonku found him guilty for stealing and convicted him for six months without any option.

The trial magistrate also ordered the prosecutor, Sergeant Ikosi Omanoje, to give the convict 10 strokes of cane in the open court.

This is my problem with our country. Why is the law so lopsided? Why is the law not applied to the oil cabals for instance. Instead, madam du world banke is negotiating with them-https://www.nairaland.com/1020765/negotiate-subsidy-cabal-okonjo-iweala undecided
