The United States Embassy in Nigeria, on Thursday, issued an emergency message to its citizens in Nigeria, advising them to be extra-cautious, based on the threat of attacks by terrorist groups.

The warning came after militants attacked the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, killing the US ambassador and three other Americans, hours after a mob attacked the US embassy in Cairo, Egypt.

In a statement, the Embassy urged its citizens, saying: "Extremists may attempt to target US citizens and other Westerners in Nigeria. The situation in Nigeria remains fluid and unpredictable."

It cited the numerous killings carried out in recent months by Nigerian radical sect, Boko Haram, and advised American citizens "to consider their personal security."
