Federal Roads To Be Repaired In 2013 – Minister Of Works by apala911: 2:06pm On Sep 15, 2012
The Federal Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, had said that some of the federal roads in dilapidated shape would be fixed in the year 2013.

Onolememen gave this assurance while introducing Project Safe Passage during a meeting with Federal Government road project contractors across the federation.

According to him, the major pre occupation of the new initiative was to ensure that major bad roads in Nigerian were put in good shape before 2013.

He said: “In other words, Project Safe Passage would be considered as a contingency for failed sections of road alignments. Federal roads without subsisting contracts will be taken over by FERMA through its direct labour scheme for the implementation of Project Safe Passage,” The statement said.

Like the many hundreds of human lives they have claimed, some roads in the country have equally consumed billions of naira without taking a good shape.

Yearly, the Federal Government allocates huge sum of money to fix roads such as the dreaded Benin-Ore Road, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Enugu PH road, Otukpo-Otukpa road and among others without any improvement.

From 2006 till date, the Federal Government has spent N18 billion to rehabilitate the road Benin Ore road, all to no avail.

It would be recalled that a certain day in 2008 when the then Minister of Transport Diezani Alison Madueke paid an on-the-spot assessment of the road,  she couldn’t help but broke down in tears, stressing, “Lagos-Shagamu-Ore-Benin Road is a clear picture of Nigerian  rejection of its responsibility to its citizens.  “The challenge for us is to act wisely in dealing with this matter. The errors had been made, but I think we can still correct the problem by looking for what will ensure a renewed government relevance not for self-serving or the good of a few but the good of all.”
